Painting in your driveway or garage.... who says it can't be done.

I've painted a few cars in my time and never used a booth. You can get a fantastic paint job in your driveway or garage just by being careful and keeping the area clean. The first car I painted in my garage was a 41 Pro Street show car. DuPont Chroma metallic base and Clear with Chromalusion flames.

Another was this truck. Simple Omni single stage.

And most recently this Deuce. Another single stage.. this one Sherwin Williams.

Over the last couple weeks I finally did my '64 Polara. Single stage Eastwood Bright White. Painted the roof first, did the cut & buff on it then did the rest of the body this morning. Here's the roof after cut & buff.

And here's the body after paint this morning. Painted right where it sits with the garage door open. Will look MUCH better after cut & buff.

Looks like excellent results, but what exactly is a "cut and buff"?

Yep. Done that many-a-time and it works great. Just gotta stay away from bugs, pollen and dust. All driveway and garage specials.

You must have a lot more tolerant neighbours than me...they moan about the smell even if I rattle can small engine parts! I could not paint a car outside over here...illegal to start with!...you have to be in a booth with filters and extractors to catch the nasty stuff. Also I like a low bake oven. Luckily I used to work selling cars for a company that had a body shop so for a backhanded few quid I can use that in the evenings. Also I have had issues with dust and other impurities even when when using a booth....god knows how much crap you have to buff out if you paint outside! Results look good in the pics though.

if you blow the paint out of the area your spraying in run a lawn sprinkler to wash the overspray down to the ground.

Painted the '71 Charger in my parents garage with the DuPont Chroma base/clear. That was back around 1988. That was the fifth or sixth car I painted.

Can't do that where I live now.

Specs on that paint? Looks like Dark Turquoise? going with that color on my 64 Polara - what brand did you go with?? Looks great!

Nope!
I live out in the country. 45 minutes west of Cleveland and 30 minutes east of Norwalk.

Had a neighbor in a subdivision back 30 years+ ago who fancied himself quite the painter.
No booth, no garage, shot lacquer in the driveway. Spiffy....
except for us neighbors, who spent considerable time afterwards cleaning overspray off our
stuff.
I remember the last time he did it....
I came home from work in my little GLH Turbo and happened to glance over across the street
in his direction, only to see him putting away his stuff after spraying a GTO.
My own Super Bee was sitting in my driveway, ready for the nightly cruise. I placed my hand
on it and felt the immediately recognizable overspray.

Let's just say the neighbor and I had a little "talk" (it wasn't the first time this had happened
and there had been "talks" before).
Let's just also say he didn't paint anything else out in the open in that neighborhood ever again....

He spent the next week or so showing all us neighbors how good he was at polishing.

Yes L1 Dark Turquoise. I used Automotive Arts Motobase (Chad's Paint Supply found the code, http://www.autorodtechnologies.com/chads-paint-and-audio just tell him the Mopar dark Turquoise he mixed for me) with Southern Polyurethane Universal Clear.
