I'm probably going to need to hire someone to build up a cage that'll be good for 10.0. Does anyone have pictures of theirs? Just interested to see what they look like.

Thanks,
-Ryan

5 pt cage, not sure what that is, 10.0 car will probably require a 8 point cage, possibly a 6 pt, I don't remember really, either went way faster wanted a 12 pt cage or slower 11.49 requires just a bar usually or I just ran until they caught me, told me to slow down or leave...he he ha ha... there are kits from Jegs & Competition engineering, that may suit your purpose... your going to school take a welding/fab course... learn how

Using the Budnick supplied pic remove the diagonals off the main hoop going to the frame connectors and the passenger side door bar. Viola- a 5 point.
Gets past the rules but not very efficient in stiffening the car.

Don't forget that if you have one bult it has to be out of .125 wall tubeing or .120 Molley.
Thats NHRA

If you are going to the trouble, go 8 pt with the halo. An X in the doors adds a lot of strength as well.

I had a bad experience w/ Rhodes Race Cars, for what it's worth.

I want to weld it up myself, but I don't have the proper tools to bend the main hoop. Maybe I will look into buying a pipe bender.

RC21.jpgRC22.jpgIt's not much more to buy a kit. I do build my own. But I have a friend with a tubing bending business. You can make the main hoop template from PVC or brake line tubing. Then take your tubing to a local shop and have it bent. The extra weight of the diagonals and right side bar bar is nothing vs the stiffening improvement. You are installing subframe connectors, correct? The tubing can either be .134 ELW (electric welded tubing) or .120 DOM (drawn over mandrel) more $. I would absolutely install frame to rocker bars between the subframe connectors and the rockers to land the main hoop. I find it easiest to drill the spot welds at the floor to rockers and cut the section of floor out for better welding access. Then cut and reinstall. See pics. Note this is a full cage instead of a bar but you'll get the idea.

Doug, do you have any more pics of your cage? Where the front bars go and in the trunk where the rear bars go? Do you have a head rest? I am looking at an 8 point bar in my 65 Belvedere.
Maybe SSR has pics too.
A buddy has access to a tube bender, etc, so after he's done his race car we are going to do my Belvedere.

Don't get fooled with a pipe bender....they are different. I have a JD Squared 'tube' bender and it works well but it will muscle you up unless you put hydraulics on it. Like mentioned, you can mock up using brake tubing etc but don't take it to a muffler shop. Most muffler shops don't the right kind of dies and will crimp the bends.

Here's more pics. Yes it has a head rest. T tube coming down from the main hoop.

I bought my 8pt from Jegs for about $350, all pre-bent kit, added a few things to make it better. It now connects/stiffens from front shock towers to rear-end frame hump, NHRA legal, and bolts in. You may want to consider going without a halo cage as I did unless your putting a $30k/ultra HP motor or going really fast/strip only type car. Halos are a lot of work and dangerous without a helmet/on the street.
And you can DYI, no bending needed, Just practice your welds!!!!!!!!!!!!
