"Please S T O P saying this" thread.

And you do love the camera.
Show a picture of yourself, if you dare.
People know what I look like. I'm not afraid to show my face in public. I've had random online forum members approach me because they saw a picture. Nobody has ever been rude or confrontational.

The O in Soldier is a hard O.
Own. Toe. Show.
The O in Solder is a soft O.
Soft. On. Top.
That difference somehow matters.
I have not heard anyone pronounce Solder like Sold Err. I have not heard them pronounce it Sahl-Derr.
Someone might somewhere but I have not heard it.
You're probably right for most people. I hear it as 'sawder' quite a lot. I use your example of 'Sahl-Derr' myself, but if I'm in a hurry or lazy I find myself dropping most of the 'l'.

Funny that it was brought up, I really hadn't given it much thought. Apparently though, others have: https://english.stackexchange.com/q...-the-correct-pronunciation-of-the-word-solder

KD should've been a grade school teacher and straighten out our "young'uns" not pounding nails even tho it pays better

Different.....Solidare has a vowel in between the L and D. You can't omit the L without sounding iggnent....
Solder? I pronounce it "sodder".
Try pronouncing my name, Ulli

....from the comments...

Much more important than how you pronounce solder is this: use leaded solder and be happy. 60/40 Tin/Lead. Friends don't let friends use lead-free junk.

In the Bible, many verses start with the word AND.
In school, I was taught that it was wrong to begin a sentence with AND or BUT.
I’ve carried that rule with me since 1970.
Now the wife.... who edits novels as a side job, tells me that this has begun to be accepted since so many people have screwed it up. That is like the “could care less-couldn’t care less” condition.
It sucks that something changes because people are not smart enough to do it right. The dummies end up winning merely by being greater in numbers.

Language is constantly changing - not just the grammar but wording, spelling and meaning of words that have the same spelling from centuries ago. Yes, constant acceptance by the greater numbers will lead to changes. That's why official dictionaries such as Oxford are constantly adding new words to the language.

If things stayed the same, we wouldn't have the language that you're comfortable with now, and what rules you were taught may have been correct for 1970 but not necessarily so for the same spoken application several centuries ago. Hence, accepting current and future changes should be regarded as natural. I find that reading a book written in 1910 already shows great changes in diction and conversational stylings.

Just for kicks:

Here's what an Old English Translator turns it into if you spoke the same sentences in the year 1100.

they keep lowering the bar, but people are just as stupid as ever ...... I could argue it has gotten even worse

Our whole life's change in every aspect because of these people you're talking about. Can you imagine a group of people that wanted to create a whole new language in our country out of some slang, ghetto mumbo jumbo and wanted to teach it in our schools. I wish it was just our language they were screwing with.

Ebonics?
Uhhh, yeah....Instead of encouraging people to RISE UP, lets dumb down to save their feelings.
One example of changing trends is the owners manuals in new cars. It has been mentioned several times before but while new cars are a lot more complicated, the new manuals are a lot bigger partly because they include numerous safety warnings that old manuals never had.

Do it right and you won't have any worries.
