This six pack hood I got is going to cost me more in prep and paint than the hood. Is this normal for fiberglass hoods? I mean it's not in horrible shape but does need some attention. Got a quote for just paint of $500? WTF it's a hood!? Then he wants T&M for all the prep I offered $800 for everything and he winced! lol Well at least hopefully he understands my budget and tries to stay around it. Sounded like he was real busy and about to collect some good coin soon so maybe I will get a break. and some sympathy since he owns a 68 RR

Shops out here are outrageous on pricing and they get it...sux....

What are you guys paying for this? anyone?

What kind of paint job are you getting on it? $500 for a semi-gloss single stage sounds like a lot! I would try another shop for a quote. In this economy you can probably get a pro to do it on the side if you have a place for him to work.

I think you could buy a compressor, entry level gun, and the materials to teach yourself for that price.

That's what I'm doing. So far- only got a pair of steel wheels under my belt, but they came out good!

I know a couple guys that would do it for a least half that maybe even less than half.

You know what? I have my '68 Satellite in for body and paint right now in NorCal over in Santa Cruz and I too thought that in this economy I could get a deal. I looked for over a year, talking to over a dozen recommended shops as well as pros that work out of their homes and I got the best deal I could from someone I felt I could trust. So far they're doing a great job. BUT - nobody was offering any deals. I was told the same story over and over - regardless of the economy, the people that have some coin for car restorations are still spending it. I'm not talking about people like most of us on this site who are saving and pinching and may take 5 yrs or more to get a restoration done. I'm talking about those lucky ones who can lay down $50K - $100K like nothing and the only holdup is time to get the work done. Actually, the 3 pros I talked to that did side jobs out of their house were some of the most expensive. I got lucky too - the shop I'm using told me if I had any other friends with cars like mine (which is actually a fairly straight accident-free original california body) they couldn't give me the deal I got - it would be twice as much. They've done a bunch of classic cars before, but he feels he underquoted. Says he is sticking to his quote though, which I feel good about.

I bought an original '68 RR hood to replace my flat hood. I got it for $200 from a guy in Sacramento and I thought it looked pretty darn straight. My body shop told me they were going to have to "straighten" it because it wasn't lining up right to mount to the hinges and close correctly. Sure enough, when I saw it, I could tell what he was talking about. The nose of the hood was pinched and it was twisted a bit. He said it would cost more for him to rework it than for me to buy a brand new repop from AMD (which was around $550). So I bought the AMD hood. Now I've got 2 extra flat hoods and an original RR hood just sitting there. I hate wasting time and money, but sometimes we have to learn by trial and error. Thank God for this site or things would take twice as long and cost twice as much!

Unless you tackle it yourself, the advice I got many times was to try to join a car club in your local area where some members specialize in these things and they help each other out by swapping services for free. I just didn't find that large of a classic mopar community in the San Jose area. It's all chevy's, with the exception of a few great FBBO members like Meep-meep who lives a 1/2 hr north of me and has become one of my good friends.

Thanks for the info, I am trying to get more quotes now it's fumy because 3 of the 5 shops I talked to first said they don';t do that kind of work..?? you don't do body work? turns out the majority of shops around here do nothing but insurance work and they make a killing at. There is one looks mostly Hispanic shop here in town but it looks shady from the out side. Still might give them a shot since it's close.

One shop I am in contact with which has a good rep for muscle cars and a decent price quoted me $600 over the phone for both sides, When I took it over there the owner who quoted me was not there but his worker took pics of the hood, I have not heard back!? lol

Was looking at craigslist but omg that looks bad lol.

As far as car clubs here is one right next door to you in Santa Clara - Mopar Alley
http://www.moparalley.org/

They host the Mopar rally every year at Fremont me and Meep were there along with several others from here :)

I think we here in Cal just get shafted because of the rich and famous lol everyone thinks we are super rich and know some one.

Guess I 'll just keep trying places and go further out if need be but $1000 bucks to prep and paint a hood is outrageous.

I paid $400 for a '71 GTX hood that was in a Georgia barn, then paid $600 more to have it media blasted, the hail dents filled and ten coats of primer stripped, two holes patched where the centered turn signals had been instead of on the fenders, and finally painted to match the car. "Silk purse from a pig's ear" was the end result, but man, that was a load of cash. Worthwhile? Absolutely.

It is what it is. This hood work takes lots of hours, should he work for free? What's a 'good' price, and a fair deal? These types of bitchy complaints just ain't going hold any water in my world. You're luck to get it done for 500 bucks, that's cheap esp. for a Fiberglass hood!

Paint......

If your restoring a real A12 hood then semi-gloss single stage is not even close to the original finish.
Those hoods were painted with "organisol" black. It's a textured finish that is very difficult to duplicate. It takes someone who knows what their doing to get it laid down right.

its an art, almost, to work and paint fiber glass and have it hold up. years ago with the big trucks using glass hoods you had to go a long way to get one done and hold up.with glass it is more about getting someone who knows what there doing and if they are good you are going to pay. i had a vette done years ago and ended up at a shop that did mostly big trucks. i paid for it but it held up, not like other guys who went on the cheap and a couple of yrs later had chicken feet in it. its the vibration that causes the problems.

What kind of paint are you talking about? Body color or original finish for an A-12 car?

I retract my previous statement due to not knowing a flip about fiberglass!

LOL Donny, no I don't expect him to do it for free and yes sticker shock hit me.

Since he was the only one who seemed to know what he was talking about and pointed out all off the flaws I am going to use him, he like some said knows what needs to be done and knows what I want. I mentioned the organsol paint and he knew it was textured without me saying it so in my book it will be worth the money.

Good think he knows mopar and is building his own 68' RR makes me feel at least it's not in a chevy guys hands lol

So $500 for paint and T&M for the body work, stupid me forgot the ask the hourly rates but out here $100 - $125 an hour is normal

Bottom line is if your not expecting it get ready for the sticker shock. But the right shop ill do the right and best job. Here's to hoping it comes out right.

forgot to mention his price includes lining the hood up and drilling the holes for the pins.

I say stick with that guy! The fact alone that he is building his own '68 RR seals the deal for me. He'll give the work the love and attention you are hoping for. I'll bet if he didn't know mopars his quote would be even more....

Yeah, I've gone to the last 3 mopar alley shows. Maybe I met you at the 2012 event and didn't even know it!
I should make time to attend some of the meetings during the year.

The turn signals are supposed to be in the hood, except with satellites and airgrabber cars.

I know, but I already had a painted-in set on the fenders so decided to stay with them.

Had to have mine painted 3 times to get it right

Yes to get the a-12 look it is not easy some people wont do it its hard to get right, my first painted did it twice and wasnt happy with the way the paint laid so he ended up paying another painter to do it the 3rd time, looks great but cost me twice as much as I expected...I guess you get what you pay for anyone could shoot something cheap with cheap paint ad get a slopply job, my car is not goiing to be a show car but I wanted it to be nice not just ok..
:confused5:

Well it came out pretty well they even got the hood to line up forward like I asked and drilled the holes for the pins for me. Now that I have done a hinged glass hood I can say at some point I will add the rear pins. the hood is light enough for one person to take off and I can at least do the lanyards and pin bezels right with rivets. Having gone the hinged route I see no reason to not have the full pin set up, it's nice to be able to have the hood up like normal but it doesn't really matter.

After several coats of mud and fixing a lot more than they thought it would take the total bill was $850 he said he had estimated it at 6 hours but it took 10 so total for hood $525 + $180 for shipping + $30 for lighter springs + $850 for body work = $1585 :angry9: + lesson learned but hey I got me a trayed six pack hood and can now get a trayed oval cleaner for it like I planned.

Even put the Plymouth badge back on just to keep this one as unique as possible ;)

Oh and it survived a 110 mph run on a straight section or road.

hood came from ebag(penstar reproductions) didn't think they would hose me like the did on this hood, it was not like the picture and the description was not even close to the way it showed up. It was beat up, too thin in a lot of spots and just looked used when it was advertised as new. got hosed I think. guess they just lost the rest of my biz :(
