Proving it's a 68 Super Bee

I thought there was some discussion on early 68s not having engine/trans VIN numbers?

Do we know the 5th digit?

WL21H would be either an interesting mis-stamp or an interesting special order.

Isn't the yellow in the pic above a 69 color? I thought a paler yellow was used prior to 69.

Poster doesn't seem to want to post the 5th for some reason.:edgy:

Maybe this is a joke. Ya'll have given more than enough ways to tell if it really is or isn't a Super Bee and this thread just keeps going.

if i read it correct he suspects that someone at some time switched the dash vin tag hence why he is asking for ways other than dash vin to figure it out

It's a bee based on all this. But since the dash Vin is not the original, whaddya suppose the hit would be if I were to sell it (% wise)?

Why do you think it is a real Bee based on what you have and what we have told you?

From what I have read your V.I.N. on the dash and title are NOT Bee numbers. The law only recognizes these as the legal identifiers as does the hobby. The car COULD be a real Bee that has had a V.I.N. plate and title switch to a non Bee model's plate and paper work, but that PROBABLY means the original numbers are now riding around on a different car.

If your body IS a real Bee the burden of proof for you is going to be very difficult to prove without a B.S., window sticker or IBM card.

Yeah, it's a bitch to prove it. But since as far as I can tell, based on all the info in this thread, it's a super bee... Minus the trans info since I swapped it out 21 years ago. Since the burden of proof is on me, maybe Ill just customize it and forget the restore. Kinda sad since it's got all the factory equipment otherwise. But if I can't sell it as a bee then I guess it's already a "clone". It's a reverse clone I guess. A real super bee doing time as a 6 banger.

What's the joke? Some of the info given is contradictory so apparently the "experts" in some cases are only in name only. However I do appreciate the help here. It does confirm what I thought, but I want to be as thorough as I can and get all the little clues to telling if it's a bee. For example, the exhaust hanger for duals was a good one. Thanks to all.

One last thing. I've heard there's a number stamped in the cowl that could help. I see something, but hard to ID under the wiper motor. Does anyone know if it's a order or serial number?

No numbers on the cowl of a 68 That I am aware of.There sre numbers on the cowl on later B and E bodies.Without dash tag, fender tag, buildsheet or anything else with the Bees serial number sounds like you got a Coronet. So I would say do with it what ever you want and enjoy it.Maybe someone cloned it into a Bee a long time ago before the cloning craze.

WL21 is a base 2 door Coronet coupe,5th digit H is 383 magnum, would make your car pretty rare and could be before the Dec-Jan 68 introduction of the Super Bee.Base Coronets would not have a Charger dash, the H would give you a Super Bee-Road Runner driveline. 68 Belvedere,s could be purchased the same with H coded drivelines to beat higher insurance costs.

True, and I agree.

Somewhat true.

ANY 383-4 is coded as and H in the 1968 models but a TRUE B would be a 383-4 Magnum (unless it was an A/C car) and it could have been ordered with H.D. suspension, but you would NOT be able to order any other Coronet model (except and R/T with a Rallye dash. Furthermore it would not have a bulge hood like a Bee.

I understood that the poster thought the vin plate was stamped incorrectly. So What is it now and why won't you post the engine code? Is it WL21H? If you now think it's a plate swap look at the rivets. Are they correct? If it is possible it was a org Bee and it has a swapped over VIN from a WL21 car, I'd say it most likely was a stolen car that got renumbered at some point. Also there are NO body VIN numbers in 68 anywhere on the body.

I believe the VIN was changed. Everything else hardware matches a bee. The vin doesn't match the frame serial numbers. Why would the clane a bee and put a coronet 6 cyl vin on it. Thanks for the help

Because something about it isn't legit. And for the last time, 68's don't have VIN #'s on the body/frame

Good grief guys. I think you all have helped out more than enough. Good info here! Unless there's new information from the OP, time to stick a fork in it.

There should be a smiley for beating a dead horse!

Just thought that a six cyl might have the exhaust hanger on the other side.

Are there two hangers?

Wrong VIN on real Bee usually means title problems. Kills value and makes selling difficult.

Wrong Bee parts on correct other VIN car usually means someone found a clean non-Bee and a rusty/wrecked Bee.

I saw more than you might think back in the 80's.

It's not a Bee plain and simple, the title and dash tag say so.

Doesn't matter if at one time it was a real Super Bee, it isn't anymore and can never Bee again!
