PSA on used wheels

I learned this one the hard way so I'll pass it on to those not already in the know. If you score or already have, some used wheels, before you get them painted/powder coated/put new tires on, get them spun on a tire balancer or some way you can see if they're dorked up. On my 67 wagon, I got a set of 4, 15x7 cop wheels plus a 5th for my spare. Sent the 4 to get blasted and coated, then had new tires put on. One was bent and the tire guy let me know. Said it might be ok but watch it. Yup, anything past 55 it shakes. I took the spare in today and the shop owner gave it a spin. Its good. Took off the old tire. Tomorrow I'll take it to be coated and next week, get it switched. At least they look good on the car. Just need new caps as the old ones, 10", are too big for these wheels. Need 9's. Next score.

Was the "dorked" wheel able to be spotted visually with a simple DIY bare wheel spin test?

yeah, i just got 2 rims off a member here... was just gonna press my luck and get them coated but i think i will mount them on the front of my car first and at least give em a spin to see if there are any obvious issues..
 
I got a set of 8 lug steel wheels for a truck years ago that all wobbled bad. They were free but still not worth it.
 
Yup. Everyday is a learning experience. Unless you are a certain engineer and know everything.
I wonder if said certain engineer knows that he knows everything, and if not, who then would be able to properly assign that accolade to the certain engineer?
That is a pretty high bar, and would seem there would not be any informational purpose for said engineer to grace us here with his knowledge knowing there was nothing to be learned by doing so.
What a conundrum.
 
And yet when you try to sell perfect wheels, blasted and primed, people compare your price to the garbage priced cheap.
Heck, I don't trust "new" repop wheels to be straight and hop free.
 
Since you mention that and one of the reasons I'll be checking even new ones, one of my Saturday car compadres clued me in on just that subject. He got some new wheels for his Restomod Pontiac Woodie. They were bad and the manufacture told him thats just how they are. WTF!
 
Local Chev dealer back in the 70s had a machine to straighten wheels. Is that possible? Never saw the machine but know someone who had his wheels worked on there.
