I had the same thing happen to me years back, I picked up a 410 gear pumpkin from a guy complete, just pull the axles and slide the new unit in.

Everything was great for about a 50 mile's.................. and then bang bang bang,Turned out the pinion nut was not tight, Pulled it back out, adjusted the backlash, tighten it back up..........and all was well again, you might not even have to pull it out. Pull the drive shaft and see if the nut is loose ( the nut can't fall out)

I bought the 410 with posi unit for $50.00, tells you how long ago it was!!!

I hope that's all it is for you, Good Luck

If the pinion nut has backed off, you most likely have done some damage. My very first change out of a 3rd member did this. The guy I got it from never tighten the nut and damage was done. I tightened it and all seemed fine until I decided to pull it again for a different gear and found chipped teeth when I pulled it out.
