I would be checking the bulkhead connector on the firewall.

Could be several different things.

Welcome from Alabama. What alternator did you replace it with. If it's a dual field and one field is not grounded, it still won't charge. Parts house will not tell you this.

Troubleshooting the charging system will reveal the answer. Replacing parts and taking guesses will not.

Need a good ground to the vr case.

my 72 had charging problem that turned out to be corrosion inside the wires. Outside looked ok but copper inside was discolored with flecks of green.

Bypassing ammeter gauge and using new wire also got rid of headlights and dash flickering dimming then bright.

Original wiring harness? Super likely there's problems there. The main connections do not do well after 50 + years.
