Rust revival

Just looked at the pictures when you first posted and it sure doesn't look like the same car.

Been a while since I've been able to do an update but there are still some pics I can post of work we did at fitzees shop.
Unfortunately the car has been on the backburner for a while...but I'm HOPING I can get back to it soon!

Here is an update on how I did the trunk area while fitzee was doing the quarters and some work on the door bottoms.

The gravel pan was removed and proved to be repaired in several layers over the years. nothing worth saving so a new one would be fabbed.

The rear crossmember was bad so I cut it out and replaced it with a piece of 1 1/2", thickwall square tube. It sounds small but is actually much stronger than what was there new.
Sections of the floor had to be replaced and the original shackle mounts were removed as the shackles are thru the main rails now.

The front section of the trunk floor was full of pinholes so I cut the whole thing out and fabbed up a new floor section.
It isn't exact to the original but thats fine.

The inner wheelwells were soft so I made new pieces to reattach them to the floor.

Heres some pics!

The floor looks great, once you get it cleaned and in primer i don't think anyboby is going to see the work you did on it. I had to look at the photos twice to see what you did with the shackles, that's how much good work you are doing.

any updates ? coming soon

She lies in wait...life and stupidity have wedged their way in and put a hold on the project for a bit.
I have 3 long term projects on the go...and made a mistake in my planning that tied up my garage and prevented me from getting the Dodge back in time to have it out this summer.
SOMETHING must be out this summer (been a while!)...so I've gone with another project that CAN be out.

It's killin' me to put it on hold...but I've decided that since its basicly had another winter added to the build timeline...I can now go ahead and plan/parts source a 2 door conversion.
That makes it a bit easier to accept.
I may go with a shiny paint now too...although I'm still a fan of satin black with those beautiful body lines and that grille.
Jury is still out on that...LoL

BTW...I picked up a set of 64 bezels like yours off Ebay! Thanks for the hint!

Black63 you need your own tv series your fabrication skills are really amazing nice work welding also. Lenny

The best part about doing this kind of work is after you get it done and look at it, walk up and knock on it and its metal...and it was free (nearly besides some sheet, time and blood).

Keep up the good work, I have faith, you can git r done! Either way its looking great and your fab skills are scary good.

man thats alot of rust

:buffer:
Thanks guys!

Made some tabs and welded into the boxes to spread the load along the tube instead of across the weld.
The boxes weld directly to the connectors because the lower sections of factory rail were a bit rough and I couldn't really trust them.

Put some strips along the top of the boxes so I could bench weld the attachment and also give myself a bit of adjustability while they were being aligned to the rails.

I used some threaded rod and a full length piece of steel dowel to act as a guide to align the boxes to the car.
No original spring mounts left to work from!

any updates ?

Nope...life, etc still in the way but it will be starting up again this fall...finally.
I have a different project I'm finishing off right now, almost ready for paint actually, and when that comes out I'm going to clear out some dead wood from the project pile.

That will leave me with one main project (the 63), a potential future Hot Rod project and the driver that I'm completing now.
I fell into the trap of having more projects than common sense...but that will change shortly.

Yours is really coming along and looking GREAT! :headbang:

I finally had the chance to read through this entire thread. You really are an incredible metal shaper Black. I'm looking at what you did and now I'm going to try it on my project. I hope it can be a 10th as good as what you have accomplished. Thanks for posting this build.

Wow! Thank you very much!
I was away from home with my son...went to the Atlantic Nationals in Moncton New Brunswick...and just got home, so I'm only now catching up on the board.
Man, there were some nice B bodies there.
Makes me even more determined to get back to work on the 63.
(But I have to admit...there was a fern green 69 Super Bee there that had me absolutely weak at the knees! LoL)

Sure hope something I posted in this thread helps you out!!! :D
