Shifting issue

Everyone calls it Kick Down linkage, me included. It's really Throttle Pressure Control linkage. It increases the hydraulic pressure inside trans. You want full pressure at WOT.
Chrysler called it Kick Down so that's why I do.

I have read this post with great interest, as I can tell that the linkage on my '70 Charger is not correct. I recently got the car and when I drove it I noticed the shift action is not quite right. The car has a Holley Street Demon carburetor atop a Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. My linkage looks similar to the pics shown in this thread. I am almost certain that the Holley-Mopar adapter was not used. Luckily I have the original intake manifold and Carter AVS carburetor, as I am going to put them back on.

even if that's not the problem, that's a problem.....as I said check the basics first

Expecting that folks on the forum might chime in that have deeper knowledge on this as we have some trans gurus here. I mention because while the linkage is effed up, needing serious correction, the k-rod adjusting, to my understanding, only affects 1st & 2nd gear. If you lengthen the adjustment you can obtain a bit of a shift delay figuring the trans is all good otherwise. A thought is if this adj is off or the rod isn't keeping force on the lever it might create the problem. Anyway, once the setup proper hope this just might do it..an obvious 1st step in the fix.

Holley lever extension is on order should be here by the weekend. I’ll get everything dialed in and let everyone know how it went.

Way back when 1979 I burned up high gear clutches. Went to dealer and bought new clutches and steel plates. Went over and talked to the trans guy and to ask why they burned up. He explained what kick down linkage did said it controls the hydraulic pressure in trans. An I see the blind man said moment.

1980 Direct Connection manual. Page 702. I can't figure out how to get the scanned page on this response?

Aftermarket Mopar terminology differs from the factory terminology. Like the difference between "posi" and "Sure-Grip".

870 is a huge carb and very tricky to adjust as it is bigger of a carb than is needed. get a professional to adjust it and i think you will be happy. You have the motor built up alot that carb will work i have an 850 Demon on mine. if you want to try start with four corners 3/4's of a turn out from bottom.

Update....

here’s what’s I did
-adjust fuel bowl levels , they were low
-adjusted air/fuel ratio for best negative vacuum. Leaned it out from the factory setting of 1.5 turns ccw.
-installed the Holley offset bracket, put throttle and KD linkage where they are supposed to be.
-adjusted kickdown linkage.

results....car kicks azz now. 2 to 3 shift issue is gone and car just keeps going. From a complete stop if I step on it, it will break them loose off the line. Car seems to be performing a lot better.

seems like when I had the kickdown linkage spring hooked up next to the kd bracket that my throttle return spring would not return all they way leaving the car running higher rpm at idle. So I put the kd spring back where it was originally and the problem is gone.

see photos of new set up.

thanks for all the help.

I had the same problem when using an "factory correct" throttle return spring, which is not strong enough.
I had installed a double spring and solved the problem.

Good to find your topic, i found some similar issues with my tranny after reinstalling the engine.
I was in the understanding all will be same and does not require adjustments on the linkages....lesson learned and i will have to do the same as you.

Have a look at Mancini, the have several raised linkage brackets to go with the Edelbrock intake to compensate for the hight differences.
I used them and worked out well, just also check for a longer throttle cable in case you require one.

Simply stated; S
Shifts occur when governor pressure overcomes throttle pressure by a set value. More throttle opening = more throttle pressure. More driveshaft speed = more governor pressure. Both can be tailored.

What would be the original settings on a TF727?
Not to hyjack this thread but anyway while on the subject....
Because mine goes to 3rd very fast and basicly stays in 3rd until i come to a full standstill.

Many variations depending on which governor, TP setting and valve body. Stock up shift MPH and pressures are listed in the factory service manual. Modified stuff could be anywhere.
