Smogger 440 build (piston height)

Oh and btw, I was hurt on the job a while back, myself. Cannot stay on my feel long....without something to "check" myself with. Practical joke involving an explosion left me with inner ear, nerve and mild brain damage. I even have to use a "walkin stick" as I call it.....hate callin it a cane at age 47. I usually don't use it if I know I'm goin to like wally world or the grocery store cause I always have the buggy to hold onto. It sucks for sure.

Im right there with you. I am supposed to use a cane but I dont. The payoff is a bone spur on my right heal that rears its head if Iam on my feet too long. Im 36.....it sux but I am alive.

I go for my ninth surgery on this lower left extremity that they like to call a leg. This time to put my knee back together for the second time. It was fixed april of this year then I got hit head on at 60 in may a month later. It ripped all of my surgery apart as it was only one month old....again...I am alive and my 5 year old son didnt have a scratch on him. 07 superduty 4 door lifted F250 turbo diesel saved my life. bought another one.

Truck after HEAD on at 60mph. Held up good, it appears but it was a total loss.

My leg after the head on accident, one month out of major knee surgery:

Side note: Don't feel sorry for me. I would rather LIMP around my garage and still be able to get up and down, under my car and over the hood than to HOP around on one leg and that almost happened if not for a miracle emergency room surgeon.

I am blessed to be alive and have no regrets.

I got hurt, initially helping my dad move a barn in sections when one side of it fell 850 lbs and crushed my left side. If I had to do it again I would cuz rather me than someone not as strong or tall get hurt. I was in great shape physically and I am 6ft3 300lbs if I wasnt the barn panel coulda crushed me up higher and I wouldnt be here typing this.

Damn dude. You been through it. I don't know why it is some folks have repeat stuff like that happen.....but it's more common than you might think. You're makin the most of it though and that's good. I push myself to the outer limit everyday.....I pay for it, but it's always worth it.

That super duty.......was it a 6 liter? I had an 04 that I sat down and ordered. First new vehicle I ever bought. Biggest POS I ever bought. I'll stop right there. lol

Yup 6.0L and just like anything if you know how to work on it and maintain it right they are a true work horse.

Mine was in the dealer shop more than my driveway. I got tired of it.

Wow you guys be careful! Its a jungle out there. I'm lucky at 60 no major trauma so far. 9155, my I D pad shows 7 T 440 E HP. The 7 means 1977 built. (Is yours maybe a 78) ? T means truck motor, E Dont know, And HP is Hi Perf. I saved my cam and lifters cause it similar to a magnum cam. The thing ran real strong for a smog motor! Ha Ha

Well here is the update.

I took the heads to the machine shop to get resurfaced since I had them off. I picked up a set of new valve springs and I was going to install new valve guide seals and springs myself but my machinist offered to do it while she had the heads getting decked. Then she went and got pregnant, well she was when I dropped them off, but the kid is now on the ground and my heads are still at the machine shop.

Since the last post my wife bought me a cam and lifter kit from scummit. Its just the summit cam and lifter kit but my springs match it and it wont be an animal of any sort but it will beat the old, higher mileage stockers.

Iam still looking for an intake manifold and I still plan to put my small plate kit on this motor just to give it some grunt and see if the stock pistons can take the abuse.

Also had the crank polished and I finish honed the block myself with 240 grit stone.

....Unless you have chrome rings! If you have moly rings 400 might be a better choice.

How bout postin a pic of your cylinders? 240 seems really coarse.

Ill post a pic of the bores Rusty.

Hows the crocs treatin you?

Ill post a pic up when I get back from easter break guys and I do apologize it is actually a 320 grit

Hmmmm I havent got that far and thats is weird that yours had a DISH on top of the the **** head height on them...got any pics?

Im not gonna bother with trying to get quench because it will never happen with the slugs this far down in the hole and I am going to give up on compression because that too will never happen, not on a budget which I am only on with THIS motor because my ultimate build will be as nice as my car is.....but money dont grow on trees and Im tired of pushing the damn thing around.

Besides, I got all the quench and compression I need in this blue bottle :)

As far as the marking on the rods or main caps, I havent taken the oil pan off but I will be in the morning. My oil drain pan was full and I didnt feel like emptying it this evening after wrestling the heads and intake off this motor. Heads (452 with rotators on exhaust side) look PHENOMENAL!!

I am sure the markings are either to identify **** tolerances where they had to under or oversize bearings OR it could be to ID matching caps to their perspective rod or main bores.

I will be gapping the rings a lil for the nitrous and probably gonna run a ductile ring but with no moly....not sure yet. I dont think small nitrous will hurt the moly much and I will barely use the nitrous so.....

I have a son who is autistic but high function anyways he's building a 440 for his 66 barracuda the motor is a 77 440 and he told me something was wrong that the pistons are way below the deck I told him to bring the short block home for me to see and he was right and it was way down I mic it and it's 157 thousands down and now we're stomped

Hes trying to build this thing and make it powerful he added a summit 468/488 lift cam double timing chain set torquer2 non egr intake with one inch spacer and Holley 780 vac sec carb and 1.5 stainless rolker rockers clevelite bearing and hv oil pump

He was doing this in his auto shop class now seems everything is wrong he wanted a somewhat lopey idle and a powerful motor he rebuilt this thing basically stock just with the other things in place now with compression way too low how will that cam work it has a 114 cam lobe separation and is this motor going to run good with the stuff he bought for it

His heads are 452 s and have bigger valve springs and some pocket porting what head gaskets should he use should they be the .022 head gaskets or just plain felpro head gaskets and would anyone advance or retard the cam timing he wanted a somewhat lopey idle but we were told after buying the cam and putting it in the block that the cam we got will not be what he wanted all of this motor package he is putting it in a 66 barracuda pleas advice would be helpfull to him on this build

Change pistons to a KB step head piston. Desired C Ratio should be one of the first considerations when building an engine. You prob want to start at around 10 or 10.5 to 1.

The KB 236 is a step head piston with a quench dome. That will get your compression up to about 9.9 to 1. That's with an 88 cc head. Then you can choose a cam that will work well with that C/R. It pays to put some research and thought into this. And you can also make the best of what you have, by using a shorter duration cam with an early intake closing point to build cyl pressure. That cam may work well. What is the duration on the cam you have now? Also, use a .020" thick head gasket.

What is the $ budget? It all depends upon that........$0?.......You run what you have with the steel shim factory type head gasket and set the cam about 110 ICL. In a '66 Barracuda it'll be fast enough.

The cam is the summit k-6401 with a 468/488 lift and 292/302 duration and a 114 lobe separation as for the motor the short block all together pistons new flattop replacement for 77 Dodge 440 we never looked at piston to deck height when tearing down so we thought wow flattop motor will be good compression and 440 s were power houses anyways and yet to put it in a 66 barracuda
