Snap ring pliers for 833 trans

Ok, I give up. I’ve monkeyed with these things for an hour and haven’t gotten one off yet. I’m rebuilding an A833 OD and cannot get the snap rings off the main shaft or input shaft. None of my snap ring pliers has been able to remove them. There has to be a special tool to get these angle ended snap rings off. What do you use?

Bought a nice one from Matco when I did my trans. Heavy duty, worked great.

I'm not familiar with the rings but I do know tools. . Are they snap rings or lock rings? Got a photo?

I grabbed this off the net. You can see there are no holes and the ends are cut at an angle.

Yep, that is a lock ring. The pointed tip style snap ring pliers don't work on those. You need something like these:https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-44900-Lock-Ring-Plier/dp/B0009OR974

Should be the ticket. You may need to grind the width of the tips for clearance.

Right, those are not really what you need, tip is wrong.

Mac used to sell lock ring pliers that is closer to the shape of the ring pictured but they haven't made them for at least a couple decades. I looked through 15 pages of photos on the net and couldn't find even a photo. The ones he bought will work fine and if need be you can grind the tips a bit. The knurl on the jaw faces hold the pointed tips of the ring well and they are beefy enough for the stout lock ring.

My 40 year old Craftsman version has wider handle grips, more comfortable than the narrow grips. The knurl does work with the pointed tip rings as well as the flat non pointed style ring.

Yep, those are the ones I was searching for. #TP602R I finally found them in a 20 year old MAC catalog. OTC 7313 is similar and looks like they may still be available. I had a lot of tech's that used the Lisle design I pictured above. They did a lot of truck and ag gearboxes and transmissions. The thing about the ones you pictured is that they very easily slip off the tips of the lock ring. The knurled tips not as easily. It's all about what is available and works best for you.
