Because I was spraying lacquer and doing some sanding the Charger sat outside most of the day in 15 degree temps, low and behold it fired right up without a choke... imagine That! Just thought I'd post since I've seen countless advice on never running without one. I feathered the throttle for maybe 10 seconds at which point it sat and idled for 15 minutes before moving it. Moving it on the other hand didn't fair well, had to winch it back in lol, 11" tires on ice doesn't work well.

That looks cold!!!!
I removed the choke assembly on mine but it rarely gets below 40 degrees here.

I didn't look at the temps yesterday so I was trying to be conservative with my guess, chances are it was colder than that seeings how that was the daylight temp.

Sure, go ahead and rub it in. 40 degrees huh? We get 11 months of winter and a month of flu season! Car does look awesome in that snow

I never ran chokes on my junk. Even the daily drivers usually didn't have one. It doesn't get that cold here either but sometimes it does. One year it got into the teens and my 360 powered 150 with a 650 DP on it started up but it was harder to keep it running. Took a few tries and it wasn't long before driving away. It will be in the 20's here tomorrow night they say.

I had an old, well broken in 383 with a Comp Series 500cfm Carter (no choke) and it would fire right up all winter long. I think chokes are nice (I'm running one now), but if you have good compression, volatile gas (not old), good tune-up and your motor isn't prone to flooding...then a few extra pushes on the gas pedal do basically the same thing as a choke (make it momentarily rich)

And Holley DP's dump plenty of gas with a couple of pumps to the floor then hit the key with your foot off the gas and it would fire right up then feather the throttle. That worked fine on 35 degree days but it took more effort on 25 degree days.

Wouldn't it be safe to assume that if it'll start well when cold without choke that it's running too rich ?
Seems like a motor in perfect tune (emission wise) would need the choke when cold.

My 318 w/ Edelbrock 1406 (elec. choke) fires off like an injected car. One pump to set the choke, probably 1 revolution of the motor and it's running strong. Stupid thing starts so well cold it cracks me up. Car looks like an absolute bomb hit it, but it runs so well.

B—-S——. In the north I always figured start it up throw it in gear and drive away! No blipping the throttle to keep it running. Gotta have a choke& correct setting. ( where’s ranger16 when I need him?).Awesome pics though.

Yeah but you can’t put in gear and just drive away without a bunch of throttle feathering. Sorry, a correctly setup choke is a godsend.

Agree with the above. My ratty satty can do this on the choke. doesn't miss a lick.

I'm in the south and 95% of the time, the choke isn't needed and is mostly there restricting air flow :D

A little story for Tori—changed over to ‘Summitracing’ elect ignition, new plugs, wires, same carb and the blasted thing fired up better than a 2017(?) f.i. Engine. 6 months later it’s back to crank, crank. I mean-1 throttle pump and one eng. rotation & it’s running.Since then it’s like ‘old mopar’; crank, crank then run.(?) Ya gotta love the ‘old iron ‘ though!

No actually it wouldn't be safe to assume but it would be safe to assume 2 pumps of the throttle temporally richens it. It would also be safe to assume that while your choke is on your motor is building carbon inside making all those pretty parts filthy. To each they're own, I don't like them if you can get by without and my engine disliked the past 2 carbs that had chokes.

I’m coming down south below Canton to straighten you out, lol! Is your heat riser working? If not, there’s ur carbon buildup.Cold,cold,cold. ( where’s ranger16 to help me out here!)
