Still trying to find the time to breaking in the new motor but after a few miles it sounds like it's time to adjust the lash again, the passenger side valves seem to make the most noise. If they are making noise while mild driving will this hurt the heads or motor? I really need to get some miles on it before the final lash adjustment. I did about 3 miles the other day and the rockers were noticeably louder than usual.

so far we have only gone 1/8 turn past lash on both side with the theory being since we went full 1/2 and the lifters pumped up and she wouldn't start we backed off to 0 lash and then ran a few miles then went to 1/8. of course i do not wont to wreck my new motor or heads should i just adjust them again or is it ok to run it like this for a few more miles or 1000?

The excessive lash is not really good for the cam with a cam that's not designed for it - i.e. hydraulic. 1/8 turn is not enough. I assume you have aftermarket adjustable rockers with a 3/8-24 screw? You should be 1 full turn from zero lash and the push rod cup should be very close to the rocker, or almost no threads showing on the ball side. Just do the mechanical cam adjustment procedure and it will start just fine.

How was it at zero lash? Still noisy? Hydraulic roller?

at 0 it was surprisingly good and not noisy... not sure how much load ws on the lifters, but at very first start up we had all of them set at 1/4 past so then going to 1/2 pumped them up. after taking them back to zero it started and sounded the best yet. not sure what that really means in the long run.

not set up yet but a good view of the screw and adjustment nut for the valve lash on these heads.

Just curious what is the manufacturer of those rockers? And who's lifters?

NM I cant read....

1 full turn? I thought it was 1/2 turn? What is the advantage of a full turn?

They do sound like they need tightening thats for sure.

Usually I would do something like this:

Exhaust Adjustment:
1)rotate crank untill INTAKE valve on same cylinder fully opens and then closes 1/2 way 2)loosen rocker nut until rocker is completely loose 3)start tightening adjusting nut untill you feel lash being removed by "shaking" rocker arm..keep turning untill ALL slack is removed.(this IS a very inportant step..may require backing off, then re-adjusting a couple times to get the feel) 4)now you are at zero..turn adjusting nut down additional 1/8th turn (appr. 003-005)

Intake Adjustment:
1) rotate engine untill EXHAUST valve on same cylinder just begine to open
2)repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 in above exh. adjustment.

I pulled those steps off another site but that's essentially how I remember doing them.

The idea is to put the lifter plunger in the middle of it's travel and one turn is pretty close. If you are too close to one end of the plunger travel or the other you can either hold a valve open or have a clatter.

Oddly enough when we had them at 1/2 turn the lifters pumped up and held the valves open so it wouldn't start, a full 1 turn would do this too? or not?

Have you made sure that you have oil to the rockers? What does the instructions from the manufacurer say. I would read this and follow the directions to the tee and see how it sounds. If still noisy, I would call them and see if they can help you sort this out. Good Luck

Oil to the rockers is great. We tightened up the passenget side at is seems much better. Right now we are total 1/4 turn past. Will have to follow upon the drivers side soon. I have bigger problems now need to re spring the edel
800 and figure out what to do with this 440source dstib that i am thinking is going to bite me in the *** i need to fix timing issues now to complete the dial in. This generic distrib I think is going in the garbage. I guess for an all stocker it probably works but with a 493 strokes with a 573 cam it ain't workin.
