Speedo gear / pinion trouble...

Hi,

Just worked out that the new speedo gear /pinion is different to the old one, so the source of my speedo issue.

All the outer measurements are dead on, it's the hole in the end of the metal shaft that the inner cable goes into that's the problem. The old hole might be roughly 1" deep, the new one is maybe 1/2" deep. It means I can't get the assembly together and the inner cable keeps the cable assembly from screwing onto the aluminum gear / pinion housing holder.

Quick question is, am I able to cut the inner cable or will it fray / split etc and ruin the cable?

Still trying to get the car on road for the last of the car shows this season... If it's not one thing it's another.

Hey mate

Are you 100% sure the inner is fully engaged in the speedometer first?

If so, I don't think cutting a little off the end should balls it up. As long as the freshly cut end will have more than a few MM of the pressed squared end you should be OK.

If you do shorten it use a cut-off wheel not wire cutters..................................MO

I would check the inner cable is fully engaged inside the speedometer BEFORE cutting anything.....just like 62 Dart Convertible said above

Definitely worth a look, I'll look at pulling and re fitting the dash end in the morning and retry. Just seams od that the new speedo gear would have a different depth on the engagement hole.

If you have to cut the cable a speedo shop should be able to put the square end back on? I know there was a tool to form it.

Thanks for the help guys,worked it out.

Pulled the plug from the back of the dash, then assembled the trans end of the cable out side of the trans (so cable into Ali holder, then gear/pinion into the Ali holder/cable), reconnected the back of the dash. It all lined up, so I've install the gear into the trans. Simple enough!
