Ring/pinion pattern off...

Maybe something as simple as this can help in the future..............

I scored this installation kit some time ago cheap. Occasionally they show up on Ebay.....

Well.. honesty hoping i will not do many more of these :) I know at some point i will get sick of the 4.57s and drop to something else... that will probably be the last one.. i don't have a lot of years left and this should be my last car

by up you mean towards the crown? There is maybe 1/16th of a inch or less left there.. with the .072 it was almost nothing..

Towards the heel.

No offense intended, but I was told by someone I respected (since passed) that owned a rearend shop....
"Once a r&p is noisy, it will ALWAYS be noisy, no matter how good the next setup is".
Considering the qualit6 of offshore gears, I'm betting there's a bunch of noisy setups out there.
Gonna be fun to see how noisy my new 4.10 spool nine inch will be.

yup.. i figured since i was pulling my axles i would just check it anyway.. i have learned a lot.. I can live with it, just wanted to make sure nothing is trying to self destruct

BTW.. no offense taken :) I'm just trying to learn **** is all.. i know i'll be changing these gears out eventually so no big thing.

One thing for sure, a 4.57 should really perk up what ever you’re putting it in.

What's funny is it's just a low power 318 MAYBE 300hp... 9.5" convertor and those gears.. i drive 6 miles to work and don't go over 60 pretty much so figured 0-60 would be fun :) was just gonna leave the car bone stock and old man drive it.. but got carried away. Haven't done anything i can't change back though. If i like it i plan to do a 390 or 408... I could have done a 440 soo much cheaper and made more power, never owned a small block before though and every b-body has a 440.. but i doubt i will ever go to the track, so it's just for fun

Soo.. between not being able to get a pattern that looks like a pattern, and tonight i set it up for the final time and i set backlash at .008, on a whim decided to check different spots and found anywhere from .008 to .013... these gears are just a mess.. i think i'm just gonna replace them. (hope it's the gears causing the runout... Wasted 2 weeks on this.

Question is.. for a beater on the street, low power.. 30" tires.. get a 4.56 or drop to 4.10.. i will never do freeway or pretty much over 60 most of the time.. Also.. richmond ok or look at something else?

To be honest, I've had 4.56s and 4.11s in my 8 3/4. Currently have 3.91s. It is just as quick and fast as the two steeper gears. But then I've got a 500 hp 440.
Still, if it were me... I'd put 3.91s in your car. If you stuck a shorter tire it would act just like 4.10/4.11s, and if you do decide on a longer excursion you could use the 30s.
I've got a new set of 28" tall slicks, and if I live long enough to wear them out, I'll probably go to a 9x30 .
(For what its worth, I bought a 4.10 nine inch center for my other car... but I have 30, 31, and 33 inch tires I can use.)
Edit: richmond gears would be my choice.

I am thinking motive 4.30.. supposed to be quieter than richmond although made by the same company (Might be BS)... I had 3.91s in my challenger for 7 years but that was a big block, thinking this weak little motor would like more gear and the 4.30 will drop a couple hundred rpm for me over a 4.56.. gonna sleep on it..

I hadn't heard that about richmond/motive. My rearend guru/friend passed away a few years ago, and I'm not as up to snuff on such things as I used to be.
For what it's worth: my friend ALWAYS tried to persuade the customer to spring for OEM manufacturer gears, if possible. He said they were always easiest to set up, and most likely to be quiet.
Of course, not possible for an 8 3/4.

BTW, i bought a clamshell bearing puller and man that thing is worth every penny, although i'm glad i saw a video where you put a spare race over the bearing so it doesn't hurt the cage when pulling... I then honed out the bearing so i can pull it on and off by hand. Little tricks like that are worth gold :)
Please post a picture or a part number of the bearing puller you are using. Curious to see which one it is.
