Spiders in my shop

Living in da nort we don't have the frequency or the girth of spiders you guys get down south or out west; but every so often come across a sizeable one. My daughter spent 2 years in Costa Rica in the Peace Corps; we visited her twice during her stint. She lived in a small village in the jungle and holy sheeit some huge friggin critters of all sorts! I laid my pack of smokes on the patio table and whoa a friggin scorpion took residence on it. Glad I took a double take before grabbing the pack. The ills of smoking might be a 2nd thought. Then we had 3-foot lizards all over and a snake slither on the patio. And go figure, the native kids are running all over barefoot. My daughter woke one morning feeling something odd in her shoe and it was a scorpion. Lucky it didn't bite as she yanked her foot out, she asked we send her some baggies to keep her shoes in as where she was it was hours to find any towns to buy baggies. She handled it better than her visiting mom and pop.
 
Since we're talking about this time of year when we have to put up with critters in the garage, car, and house, I came across this video where the guy experiments with different things that work and don't work.

I know the spearmint works to keep spiders at bay but here he proves mice definitely don't like it!

In all seriousness.

Since most pest control people say spiders are good, there are very few who would recommend a killer. Not me.

Use a concentrate called Tempo. It has a fast kill and a long-duration. Spiders are tougher, but it gets them. To keep spiders away get rid of other bugs. Use Demon. Its great (but old school) and kills all the other creepy crawlys. If you don't mind some white residue, then use Suspend. It has micro-capsules that release slowly for months.

Note: none of these say kills spiders, but if it kills "mites" of any kind, that is an arachnid and it will get the spiders.

Put a couple mouse sticky pads on the floor in the corners or open areas out of the way. You will find out what crawling around and catch most of it.

I tried this and ended up having to carefully pry a lizard off the glue pad. It took awhile bit I think the lizard is ok.

I've been at this house for seven years now and haven't seen a hair of a mouse anywhere. Having brand new upholstery and carpet in the '62 I've been really watching for them. Well this past fall I had a baby mouse hanging around outside the breezeway door. Set a regular trap with just a little peanut butter and it would clean it off and not trip it. I had that trap set so light I had to be careful just sitting it down. Little mouse was too light to set it off.

Went to Lowes and bought four sticky traps. Placed one against the outside wall and just put a tiny bit of peanut butter on the far edge so it would have to go across the glue to get to it. Caught it in about an hour. Now what do you do with it? It's still alive and suffering. Took a small bucket with water in it, flipped the mouse and trap upside down on the water to drown it. I'm not too keen on those traps.

Set another sticky trap in the same place the same way and caught another one. Placed yet another one and had no luck catching anymore. (This is outside) Now I know the mother has to be around somewhere so I placed a sticky trap inside the garage door at both sides in case one tries to come in. Later that night I caught the mother. Now I'm freaking out about seeing mice and I'm worried about the car.

I got out the trusty spearmint extract and placed a couple of small containers in the car. Mixed up some in a spray bottle and sprayed along the garage door, around and under the car. I've used this for spiders and it really works. No signs of mice since.

As far as the sticky traps left at each side of the garage door, they filled up with all kinds of beetles, insects, thousand leggers and were so full in a couple of months nothing was going to stick to them anymore.
 
"Miss Muffet's Revenge" is a product I use and seems to work well. You spray it and leave it dry clear. I buy mine at Ace hardware. Works for months.
 
Enough geckos that probably eat the nuisance spiders. Carb cleaner does exterminate the scorpions.
