Anyone know the difference between the 3257 and 3258 Starters ? Is there a chart anywhere showing the specs ? There is a slightly shorter 3250 also. Thanks in advance

Can't help with the number differences but I do know the longer starters produce more torque than the early/shorter units.

I just took a 3257 off my 68 RR. I bought from Chief Auto Parts 34 years ago, so it served me well. There were hammer marks on the cover, but I never hammered it. Whoever had that core before me did.

I replaced it with a reman 3258, which so far works most of the time. lol

3257 = 1.1 kw, 1.5 hp
3258 = 1.3 kw, 1.8 hp

or so. I think the 3257 was little bit lighter. I was gonna keep it, but got tired of tripping over it, so returned it for the core refund.

From reading, I think the bog standard was 3257 until mid-1970s, and that's when they started with the 3258. Everyone who would know for sure is probably gone.

3257 and 3259, along with 3250, are Lester numbers for the Chrysler gear reduction starter introduced for the 1962 model year and produced through the 1987 model year. Lester established the catalog cross reference numbering system for remanufactured starters, alternators, and other electrical components. Lester is now part of WAI Global.

NOTE: Original Lester number 3260 was reassigned to 3257. 3258 is an alternate number for Lester 3259.

3250, 3257, and 3258/3259 cover multiple Chrysler starter numbers that changed over the years due to multiple revisions in starter coil windings, starter drives, brush holders, speed, reduction gearing, horsepower (hp) ratings, etc. The following listings show the Chrysler numbers for each of the Lester numbers, in general, but not necessarily complete.

3250 denotes the 1.3-1.5hp starters produced for 1962-1973 models including the following Chrysler numbers:
  • 2095150 - 1962 and most 1964-1969
  • 2098500 - 1963 and some 1964-1969
  • 2875560 - 1970-1972
  • 3656650 - 1973 model production through January 1973
3257 denotes the 1.5hp starters produced for 1973-186 models including the following Chrysler numbers:
  • 3656575 - From January 1973 - 1974
  • 3755900 - 1974-1980
  • 4091975 - 1980
  • 4111355 - 1973-1977
  • 4145359 - 1981-1986
3259 denotes the 1.8hp large winding housing frame starters produced for 1975-1987 models including the following Chrysler numbers:
  • 3755250 - 1975-1979
  • 4111860 - 1978-1979
  • 4091950 - 1980
  • 4145360 - 1981-1987
NOTE: Numbering years and applications can have some crossover variances in aftermarket listings.
