I picked up this 1974 Sun 1160 engine scope from the local Trade School for $25
everthing works perfect including the infra-red combustion analyzer and timing light. it even came with all the manuals, attachments, and
specification cabinet full of tune up cards covering virtually every make and model, foreign or domestic, from 1961 to 1974.

It made setting up the new carb on the charger a snap.
jetting, metering, choke, fast idle, idle mixture, high speed mixture,
accelerator pump all accomplished in a little over an hour. I then had time
to do a cylinder power balance review and found a slightly fouled plug in #8
and the scope showed an irregular spark pattern which led me to a worn reluctor in the distributor. Set the timing, and found a small vacuum leak in the capped off port on the carb at the end thanks to a shaky guage needle.

1 afternoon and 1 test drive and I was good to go.
car runs fabulous, and I am getting a solid 17 mpg highway out of a 383
magnum with an automatic.
It took me right back to high school auto shop so I had to go and do a quick burnout at the park :headbang:

That's NICE!!! I missed out on one of those a year ago at a swap by not getting my effin' wallet out in time! Great score;when can I make my appointment for a "Super" tune on the Plymouth? Oh wait;you're out in Colorado...kind of a long drive...

The door is open with the fbbo discount.

Today I will tackle the dual quad on the convertible. I read up
on the procedure this morning and it is pretty straight forward
I found the tune up specs for a couple of dual carb set ups
in the specification cabinet, brand X and Y, as well as all the hemi info.
for reference.
oh yea MF this is sweeeet

Wow , I feel ripped off. I just bought a Snap On Timing light off of E-Bay for $80.00.

Sweet! I want one.

What's your 383 build (cam etc) and gear to get that MPG?

Have you dyno'ed RWHP?

Very interested for my 383 and/or 400 or 451 build.

Got one of those several years ago but it was in a sorry shape so I gave it away.....didn't have any of the manuals either....

Wow, great find! $25 bucks is a steal for that...

its a stock 66 383 w/26,443 miles on the build
stock 915 heads no headwork 3 angle valve job hardened seats
stock grind cam can't remember the profile right off
3.23 suregrip
stock 4 hole intake w/1/2 phenolic spacer
edlebrock 650
stock MP electronic ignition
38 deg total timing at 2500 rpm
ngk xr5 plugs Jacobs chrome 50,000 volt coil 8mm wires
factory clutch fan
Factory magnum exhaust stock h pipe with original 1969 mufflers and resonators
25 inches total tire height (225 70 14)
full size spare, coolant, oil and a small butt heavy *** tool box in the trunk

I have never had it weighed nor dyno'ed

Ill have to look up the cam numbers. I stayed with the stock unit because the 284/484 isn't big on vacuum at my altitude (8500 ft) in rides right around
6 to 7 inches hg.at 750 rpm the stock cam gets it into the 10 to 12 area and makes for nicer headlight door operation

I have a 130 mile commute round trip to work with a solid change in elevation
of 3500 feet or so and an averge speed of 60 mph. good mix of traffic,
flat open road and a good climb into the mountains.
Id give you the rpm average butt I have yet to install a new, accurate, tach
17.3 mpg was the highest butt it will get 16 all day long without effort

Hope that helps

Nice score! My Dad used to work for Sun, so we have a few of these laying around. Cool find for 25 bucks! :headbang:

Thanks. Did you enlarge the valves in the B heads?

I imagine my 66 383 would do about the same.

I don't believe so YY1
I bought the heads already done from a friend and
he did not convey that to me.

Thanks. I just assumed they were the heads that came on the 66 383.
I guess the 66 and some 67 closed chambered haeds have smaller valves than the 67 440 heads, even with the same casting #.

Those a good machines for old cars. They can do things for the old cars that the newer handheld units can not. Unfortunately they take up a LOT of room in your garage.
