Swapping original alternator for new

I just put it in a trickle charger last night. Yesterday when I took it for a drive to fill the tank and have the new alternator tested, before my post, I had it running for about a half hour. The ammeter show either discharge or right in the middle without much bounce like I had before the replacement.

I may need to figure out how to test the alternator from the alternator terminals instead of the battery, in guess... Then look at the voltage regulator.
The alternator MUST be connected to a load, with field voltage applied, turning at given RPM. The Factory Service Manual shows the load test procedures. NEVER operate the alternator with the the output wire disconnected as the diodes will be damaged. IF the alternator shows no output, it is possible that the brushes may be worn out or the field voltage may not be present, due to a faulty regulator. Again, the service manual shows how to test for this possibility. DO YOU HAVE A FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL for your year and model? A great source of information......

No manual. Wish I had one and in guess I'll have to see if there is one in print. I mentioned above, the alternator is brand new roundback single field from autozone. I can't imagine that it's bad, but maybe... If I run a multimeter to something on the alternator when the car is running, do you know if I can test the alternator? Or how you'd test the voltage regulator? Also what the white round box is that is mounted to them firewall next to the voltage regulator?

- Charge your battery to full charge (approx 12.6 volts). Disconnect the battery charger to verify this voltage with a voltmeter. If it's not fully charged, charge it until it is.
- Start the car and bring the engine up to high idle (approx 1500 RPM). Check voltage at alternator with a voltmeter, one test lead on alternator case and and the other on the output terminal on back of alternator. Should be around 14.5V. Also check voltage at battery while car is still running at high idle. Should be about the same voltage, 14.5V.

Windshield wiper gear box.
