finally broke the drums free with a torque gun and proper drum puller......took us 3 weeks to get the proper puller and quite and effort with the gun but it worked! now onto to redoing the shoes, springs, w/c and lines........cant thank you all enough for the suggestions!

Yeah, those can be a pain in the *** sometimes.

The only way to do it is the right way. Glad to hear you were able to get em off without damage. Remember to clean up the hubs and the axle taper where they contact and add a little dab of anti seize.

Install a later model rearend assembly and be done with it.

If you switch over to slip on brake drums ('65 and newer) there's no reason to swap to a later model rear. The tapered axle units are just as bullet proof as the post '64 versions.

I did this years ago and never looked back. There is no downside.

Me to. I am sure in 1965 the racers didnt swap the rearends back to the tapered version. They probably thanked the factory for its simplicity. No downplaying how strong it was for it time. But there is something to be said for inovations.

Quite true, however once you get the drums and hubs off and convert to slip on units, (unless you're going racing on a regular basis and you're fine tuning your gearing), you shouldn't need to mess with the rear again for years. Nothing against switching, because with the later units it is easier to remove the axles, its just not necessary to spend the extra money to switch for car that will be driven mostly on the street.
