Now that I have the oil pump primed thanks to the fast and knowledgeable gents here, I am now on to the distributor. Which was of course taken out before the engine was bored and stroked. So i supposed my question is this-I apologize in advance if this has been covered over and over.
: On my 73 RR clone with a 318 stroker how do I install the distributor correctly since there was no markings left in place? If i recall I set the number 1 cylinder on TDC on the compression stroke (which I can't for the life of me remember how to do) then move into position and secure. Yes? No? Maybe?

take out #1 spark plug.
put your finger over the hole while someone turns the engine in correct rotation until you feel pressure on your finger.
when you feel pressure, you should see the marks on the harmonic balancer. keep turning the engine the same way and line up TDC...with the harmonic balancer hash mark
BAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM,,,,youre at TDC.......THENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

install the dizzy so you have good swing in both directions,...THENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
put on the rotor....whereever its facing....THATS YOUR #1 PLUG WIRE....THENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
install the rest of the plugwires in clockwise direction in this firing order>>> 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

start the engine and go croooooooooooooooooze for chixxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Will be trying that tonight my friend. Many Thanks

only thing to watch for, that dog didnt mention,is that the piston comes up twice for every one rotation of the cam.there are two points you will feel pressure from the plug hole.a week one(exhaust stroke)and a strong one(comp stroke).make sure you do the aligning from the strong pressure, not the week one.

Very Good to know. Thank you. I still like I'm skipping something....I'm sure I'll remember when I blow the car up LOL!

just double check everything.most people get nerves when they start a new motor for the first time.

You should index the intermediate shaft correctly too. The slot in the top of the shaft should point to the forward most intake manifold bolt on the driver's side of the engine with the engine at TDC. Then when you install the distributor, locate the vacuum canister at about the 8 oclock pisition and it will be just about perfect. Although you CAN index the intermediate shaft in any direction, it is best to do it right if you do it at all.
