The Kelly Charger

Only photo of 1970 seats that came in my car, that I can find

I received a ton of offers to buy my 1970 seats, all a touch low(but hey I dont blame them, everybody likes a deal!!)
If I sold my 70 seats for what I was being offered, I would still have to add cash to get a set of 1968/69, that were trashed.
The 1970 seats were in good enough shape that I would have used them until they started to crack and rip up.
So one day I got an email, that a fellow Mopar guy, had a 1970 Charger, in very nice driver+ shape, and he needed 1970 seats, as his car came with van, or some aftermarket seats.
Now this is the part that convinced me this was fate, his car had same color blue inteior, and these seats would go GREAT in his car, JUST as they are!!!!
He asked how much it would take to buy them, I told him, just get me a set of seats for my car and we swap.
It took him a few days, but on a friday afternoon he sent me a text containing photos of a set of seats from a 1969 GTX.
He said he was standing in front of them now, and would they due as a trade?
If so he would buy them.
They were a little beat up, but I never expected to find a set of seats with the correct seat covers in nice shape, so I told him yep we good to go.
He paid what ever he paid, loaded the seats in his car, and started the 12hr drive from his home to mine in NY!!!!!!!

He arrived about 2AM, and even though I offered for him to stay in my guest room, he didn't want to impose on me, and stayed at a Holiday Inn 4 miles from my house.
The next day in the early AM, we met at my house, traded seats, I bought a set of pin type caliper brackets he had gotten me from a pick and pull, shook hands and he hit the road, with his new 70 seats, and a smile!
A few days later he sent me some photos of the seats in his car, and they fit perfectly!!!
I felt very good about that, we both got what we needed for our cars, and that's what is great about a lot of guys in this hobby.

My car also has the 6 way seat, and as luck would have it when the blue 1970 seats were installed in my car, it had the 6 way seat frame, although a 1970 model.
I ended up doing the same trade, only with a completely different gentlemen, trading a 1970 6 way seat bracket for the 1969 one.
On this deal I was not so happy.

On this deal the guy with the 69 six way seat bracket, came to me with the idea that he would mail me his 1969 bracket , and a return slip(prepaid) and I was to send him mine if I approved trade, or send his back to him if not.
IMO my seat frame was in much better shape, then the one that arrived, but whatever, the seat bracket worked and was correct to my year, although not as tight as mine, it worked.
The part that got me upset was there was no return slip in the box, so when I called and asked about it, he said return shipping was on me.
SO basically it cost me 45 bucks to do him a favor!!
A guy who I never met, and who came to me about the swap, again the 1970 version is a tad more valuable because there are less of them.

Deal is done, I am not holding a grudge, but it did rub me the wrong way, when
I found out he restores them and sells them.

So at this point I now have undone the seat issue, I inherited when I bought the car, and have the correct 1968/69 bucket seats with the correct 1969 6 way seat mechanism.
I am on my way!!!

When I installed the Disc brakes(up front) I had to swap spindles, so I changed the upper and lower ball joints, even though they were in good shape, with new Moog ones. I didn't change the bushings. I don't know why, as I own all the Mopar specific front end tools, and have rebuilt dozens of these front ends. I hope it doesn't bite me in the ***!
I also installed a set of Firm Feel steel "NO FLEX" tie rod sleeves with the LARGER C-body tie rod ends.
I threw them on because I had bought them years ago, for another car that I no longer own, and they just sitting there.
My plan is after I have 1/4 panel done and I start putting some miles on it, I will decide if I want to upgrade torsion bars, and steering box. At that time polygraphite or polyurethane bushing and new idler arm, will be installed

On my 1966 Charger I rebuilt the front end with poly bushings and the larger tie rods, I also got the quick ratio pitman arm (I think they came on the Challenger T/A, or ARR Cuda) and a Firm Feel stage 2 box installed.
Car handled very well.
I am not 100% sure I will do anything with the steering box, but if money permits, I may go with the new Borgeson box.
I have read about a guy who makes an install kit for this box that requires NO CUTTING of the steering column, that is the only way I would install it.

I will take a moment to state my desire/intentions with my 1969 Charger.
I just turned 40, and have owned Mopars from 17 on.
I have always had a vintage Mopar on the road, along with my daily, the wife's car and a work vehicle.
After years of insuring and maintaining a personal fleet of cars, (LOL)now my children have gotten older, I have decided to down size.
I bought my wife a 2016 Charger R/T, that's what she drives to work, and our main family car.
I bought a 1984 W-150 stepside, and installed a 1977 hood, fenders, grill, to make a MIDNIGHT EXPRESS clone/tribute, that's the work truck winter vehicle.
Then Dec/2016 I got my 1969 Charger, this will be MY main daily car. (weather permitting)
Of all the vintage Mopar iron I have owned 1969 Charger are my personal favorite, and I LOVE TO DRIVE the older B-bodies.
So I want to get her up to a very nice driver car, while maintaining a "factory style" look.
I intend to own it for the rest of my days.
And this is what I want to do with MY car.
I have owned them stock, and I owned them hot rodded to basically a street legal race car. I had fun with them all.
But now I just want a sweet running/driving cruiser.
It just so happens that the car I ended up buying, has VERY little rust, and has the original engine and trans, and they work very well. So those are what I plan on running.
I don't plan on beating the snot out of it.
I am replacing the things that must be replaced, and leaving the rest alone.
(I will replace the vinyl top, and paint the new 1/4, but will most likely blend the paint, not paint the whole car)
As time goes by my plan may change.
I have toyed with the idea of changing to a 4 speed, and or building a 493/500/512 size engine using a 400 block and a 440 source kit, using a mild cam( modern version of factory magnum or a step above ) and running the stock exhaust manifolds. But because I don't have tons of cash, I must spend wisely, and fix the things that will allow it to be driven and enjoyed ASAP.
The disc brakes are more of a piece of mind while driving around idiots, and I MAY go with a FI tech EFI kit.
I will also more then likely convert to modern A/C compressor over the stock one, but retain all original parts in my garage.

So basically that is my plan with my car, no R/T clone, it will stay triple green, and no HUGE shiny rims.

This may not be everyone 's cup of tea, but hey different strokes for different folks.

A bit off topic, but this is my wife's 2016 R/T
It has the 5.7 Hemi.
I installed the Shaker, by pulling all parts from wrecked Challenger.
I installed the front Brembos, from a new SCAT PACK Charger, when he upgraded his To SRT ones.
I am also running the 6.4 Hemi exhaust manifold, and 6.4 SRV intake manifold, using MSD window switch to activate and deactivate the SRV, besides that engine is stock, She runs high 12's at 107, and wife 0-60 times are 4.5 seconds.
She designed the decal, and a guy in California made them for her.

I scored a set of these in 15 inch

I love the look, Death Proof, and the Dukes have them.
But they were GM bolt pattern!!!!!!
One of them, the one I put on back in photo, is drilled out to fix Chrysler, kind of a UNI-LUG, I didn't want to use wheel adaptors, to make them fit.
I will probably put them up for sale.
The reason I haven't yet is I would think 9 out of 10 guys that want these rims, want them in the Mopar pattern, and it would be a hard sell, and then there is shipping cost.
I got a set of reproduction stamped steel wheels in 15 inch, along with set of Cooper Cobra tires.
I will find a way to mount the original deep dish wheel covers my car came with to the 15's.

Steelies and dog dish caps with RWL tires are one of my all time favorite combos and I've put them on many a mopar over the years. ;)

To keep your charger as rust free as it is now make sure you oil the quarters, rockers, pillars, doors, fenders, etc. I drive my 84 W350 cummins crewcab years round up in the north of Canada and help keep the rust at bay by doing this twice a year. :)

Once I have 1/4 done.
I thought about that oil/rust preventive product NHOU.
I saw it advertised on the Saturday morning car shows, they even have the one that looks like undercoating.
Is that what u use?

I think that brings us up to the point where I ordered up my AMD 1/4, and started to cut the damaged one off.
I removed the fuel tank, then I cut the bulk of the SMASHED 1/4 off.
Once that was out of way, I removed the rear window trim, and cut out rear window.
Found some rust in the window channel, upper passenger side.
I found a replacement section for sale, and bought it from Tony D'agostino, from Tony's Mopar parts.
I ordered it 11:30,Thursday it was on my door at 10:20 Friday!!!
Tony also has a NOS 1969 LH 1/4, and I wanted it so bad, but at $1600, bucks, I could not swing it.
I asked to work out a way to make a $700 deposit and have him hold it, so I could make payments on it, but he has done that in the past and had issues, (and I understand 100%) so AMD it is.

I would have LOVED to keep my Charger all 1969 MOPAR metal, but it was not in the cards, and its not like I have a rare car.(but I would have dug it)

Rear window rust, and replacement piece, I still have to make up the corner part.

When I removed the rear seat, I found a POSSIABLE clue as to how/why the rear quarter ended up wrapped around a telephone pole...…………...

I also found these under the rear seat, one looks to be remains of oil filter box, and the other is small parts envelope, perhaps once containing points???

Nope I use old engine oil from my 12V cummins motor, and a small hand pump oil can with a flexible end to get into areas. I also use fluidfilm to spray things down, holds up really well to wet/snowy conditions and is 100% organic since it's made from wool oils. For the fluidfilm can I also have a 24" long flexible line I can hook on with a 360* spray nozzel on the end that I can feed into frame rails and other hard to reach areas.
