I used to go to the "hill" in Lompoc
Vandenberg's Tracking site, supported the Launch vehicles
Watching and listening to the Plasma crackling as the Delta, Atlas, or what ever launch vehicle was going up.
Awesome GIG, albeit at 0200Hrs, 0300Hrs etc.
All we would hope to catch was good "DECOM Lock" on the 2 "S-band" frequencies for anyone who understands Telemetry

If Goddard had received as much enthusiasm and encouragement by the government as Korolev and von Braun did by theirs, the Americans may not have needed so many Germans in the rocket programs.
