this might have been Neil Armstrong's funeral

If Goddard had received as much enthusiasm and encouragement by the government as Korolev and von Braun did by theirs, the Americans may not have needed so many Germans in the rocket programs.

We always had this perception of the Russian tech inferior to Ours, like Bizzaro Superman vs Superman. Not a very accurate assumption. Did We ever build a heavy turboprop that could do 600 mph? They beat us down in SST race...& the French....yes the tu-144 had problems, but we never got past mock ups. Migs & Suhkois are almost always ones we have to work to beat.

Exactly what I meant. The American space program didn't get enough government support. Most of the rocket research was directed at weapons. Eisenhower dragged his feet saying he didn't want to 'open that can of worms' by blatantly overflying foreign countries in space, and especially not by a military rocket. JPL was ready to go, wanting to orbit a satellite years earlier. Their launch in September 1956 with the Jupiter C rocket was complete and able to do this, but they were not allowed to fuel the fourth stage that was needed for the final orbital velocity.

Not until the Soviets launched first was the US satellite program given a real push. After the launch failure with the Vanguard rocket blowing up on takeoff, JPL's Juno was finally allowed to do its stuff and get Explorer 1 into space in 1958. Still up there, that first American satellite is the oldest orbiting piece of artificial construction still flying.

Meanwhile today, Trump is saying on one hand that he wants to invigorate further space exploration and get the Mars program going, but on the other hand also wanting to further cut NASA's budget. Despite that, there's a new job opening at NASA; anybody want to apply to be a 'Planetary Protection Officer'? It pays $124,000 - $187,000 per year. https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/474414000

I figured a good chance that You were there.

Well
It was crazy because NASA had a foreign pilot flying it
Sweeden or Finnish?
It was a Technology demonstrator
Interestingly enough, it was a "3-Axis" multi thrust where as our F-22 is a 2 axis
But, I saw it flying that day, then we heard it crashed just North of "North base"
About 15 miles from my home
He was successful on bailout
Only 1 plane
Total loss
