Early 70's, I'm sure he has his rhyming dictionary out since he was trying to make a name for himself as a song writer.
I think if you interpret the song as blinded by the light meaning addicted to the thing that can make you go blind, you are on the right track.

Yes I used to be quite a fan, considering it was the music I came of age to. A ton of good car songs too.
I ignored his social positions ( I won't use the P word) for decades because the music was so good.

But his latest nonsense is so bad , as far as Im concerned he can go pluck a guitar string.
