What's it Worth Thinking of buying this, little help please!

what Cranium said plus a couple hundred hours of disassembly, cleaning parts, and reassembly

Saw this 70 Charger 500 SE a little while ago and now it is posted on e-bay.

I know it has some issues and some of the parts (like the instrument cluster, air cleaner, and front disc brakes are/may not be correct) but the car itself is savable. The A/C is long gone but I think I found a complete set-up.
Not to keep but to restore and pass on to another.

Some thoughts would be nice either in a PM or here.

My thought is that these cars, finished to a pretty high standard, would bring 45-65 K but my knowledge is limited when it comes to 2nd gen chargers.

I am right on the fence about this one. Problems being it is 12 hours away and that is a little $$$$$ just to go check it out. Wasted money if I turn around and walk away. Second issue it that there is considerable work to be done, not that I can't do it but maybe a better investment would be a better condition car for a little more money. My offer would not be what the seller wants.

Anyway, thoughts either way would be great. Who knows, maybe I am just trying to talk myself out of pulling the trigger.

Thanks

So, did any of us talk some sense into you?

This is what I see.

Unless you can do the restoration work yourself as a project, you will have more money into the car than likely to ever recover.
That said I never bought a car thinking about selling them, bought them thinking about working on them as a hobby (an expensive hobby.)

Agree: I never think of them as an investment. I try not to lose money on them though. I've never borrowed money for an old car but sometimes I think that would be better to do rather than having a project car you sink big money into every month to arrive at the same thing after a year of grinding, welding, cleaning and sanding.

Every toy car I have ever bought I always look at them and the work I will need to do to get them in better shape and sell again at a profit
If it does not pencil out I need to buy it cheaper or look for something else
If you need such and such a car and can not build it yourself for less then should just buy the same car already done and let other guy loose money on the project

That roof probably looks like swiss cheese under the krylon primer they sprayed on it.

As I said, I love working on these cars (if I own them) but will no longer do any project for a client. Just too much wasted time waiting for decisions to be made and always under some time crunch. When I own the car I can restore it the way it should be done and in the time frame I am comfortable with. In most cases 12-16 months if all goes reasonably well. When working for someone there was always, "Can you have it done before xxxxxx show, I really want to show it then". Nope, it will be done when it is done. As unexpected items were found, clients wanted to cut corners to save money. I never liked that and I am in a position to not have to do any car at all. I like working on the cars because it makes me happy to finish one and admire the workmanship that went into making "a wreck" somebody's "treasure" or "dream car". IDK, just seems like the right thing to do. But, I don't want to lose money in the process.

As for this 70 Charger 500 SE, I have decided to take a hard pass on it. Although it can be done it is not the right car for what I like to do. I will still be looking for the next, next in line project.

I want to thank everyone for their helpful imput, it is nothing less than what this forum has at it's core: "Great people who want to help others". Thank you all!

Unless you are doing the car for yourself and can do most of the work yourself, you made the right call.

Good call builderguy! While you are certainly capable of completing and flipping it, the money may not be there. Only you can make that call. If it was your forever car, different story.
Keep building and flipping, the Superbird will show up.
Good luck!

Congratulations. I also think you made the right call. A friend of mine is restoring his 70 Charger right now. I think he paid $4,000 to have the instrument cluster done, maybe that included some of the dash. Anyway he estimates he'll have 10 million dollars in it when he gets done.

if one hasn't priced paint and materials lately, you will be in for quite a shock when you do............we are not talking a gallon of rustoleum and a brush or roller here.
just junk thinner [think gun cleaner] is $95.00 per 5 gallon can here, [priced just two weeks ago] when a few years ago it was $50.00 for 5 gallons, and a few years before that when we would buy it for just general clean up duty, it was only $15-$20.00 per 5 gallon can.
paint that was $50-$80.00 per gallon is now $380.00 per QUART, and we are not talking any shade of RED, which is, as it always has been, CONSIDERABLY more !
primer, bondo, sand paper, sanding blocks, and all the other materials necessary for even a mediocre paint job have gone up tremendously as well, and before you know it, it is possible for you to have 5 grand in just material alone, never mind the time and cost to repair any panels or apply paint.
no wonder paint jobs are FAR AND ABOVE the $29.95 "Earl Shieb" or "Macco" paint jobs of times past.
and we are not even talking about custom paint, which can easily approach 100k or above.
i do not do paint and body work, but a very good friend of mine does, and has been doing this for over 50 years. his experience includes repairing "totals" to award winning "best paint" trophies at indoor "world of wheels" events, and everything between.
when he talks, i listen..........
sorry to be a "debby downer", but having been "playing with cars" since birth, and the "full size" items since 1968, i have seen many things over the years, and one thing is for certain, prices for EVERYTHING is going up by leaps and bounds.
just my personal life experience.
your mileage will vary.
