I found out this weekend that I needed to get a new lower control rod for my Slap Stick shifter. I looked around the net and saw that Tony's Auto Parts, a pretty well-known vendor who's always getting mentions on Graveyard Carz, sells them for $45, which I thought was a fair price.

So I call up Tony's first thing Monday morning and order one over the phone. Nice, smooth, process. Then the guy tells me my total will be $62! That's $17 to send a pretty small/light rod from Delaware to Florida. That definitely did not make me happy, but okay... maybe they charge extra because they're shipping it express because they know people need their parts ASAP. I see the charge go through, but get no tracking number, so I know they're not paying for that.

I check the mail on Tuesday... nothing. Well, maybe they sent it Priority mail so it'll get here on Wednesday. Nope. Still nothing. I can order a set of transmission cooling lines from an outfit in California, with free shipping, and get it in two days, in a HUGE box, but here I am paying a guy in Delaware $17 to ship a little rod and now it's day four and still nothing?

I guess this will be my first, and last, purchase from Tony's Auto Parts.

I have purchase numerous items from Tony's
Always a "positive" experience

In fact, he personally e-mailed me one time.

Bruzilla;
My suggestion would be to contact Tony's and make a complaint.
hell, I ordered a couple of items from Rock Auto and it cost me $15.00 to ship.
A small box.
I thought that was high too.

Because I've complained to vendors before, and I find it to be a total waste of time. On the rare occasion that I get a response, it's generally a load of BS about how "we value our customers", "we try to do our best but...", and we can't forget "some things are beyond our control".

I would rather spend my time finding a new vendor than reading such drivel. :)

I too have dealt with Tony on numerous occasions and he is a standup guy!

Just take the time and give him a call before you throw in the towel!

Sorry Bruzilla,
I think you are missing the "mark" on this one.
My personal belief is:
"Never go out angry, throwing BOMBS every which way, blowing everything up without at first trying to resolve the situation."

Call that drivel.
But I am sure Tony would personally address your concerns to you.
Don't slam a Good Company/Reputation over one incident.

Give him another try and call him and tell him know how you feel, I am sure it will work out..

I charge $5.00 surcharge on top of the shipping fee for UPS and a 20% surcharge on less-than-truckload shipments. It is a common practice to assess a handling fee in my market (non-automotive).

While your probably right, I do not see him S MISSING THE MARK, here your wrong. For Bruce, it is his first order so it is a 100% thumbs down.
I guess this will be my first, and last, purchase from Tony's Auto Parts.

IF it was his second order, it would be a 50/50.
You would never deal with a company that did you right on a 50/50 basis. He's pissed for a reasin and a good few were mentioned.

Bruzilla I'd follow there advice and cll Tony. Report back the findings.

I am a person that believes your mark-up prices should cover your handling.

Yeah, rumblefish360;
You are correct...
It is a tuff call
We all know Bru,
He is a great sport...on this incident he's disappointed.
-I can dig it.

But I just thought that with Tony D'Agostino's reputation and commitment to customer service, he would like to hear from Bru.

This is from the website:

"I really appreciate all of my customers and in return try my best to offer quality parts, competitive pricing, and good customer service. We offer a 100% refund on all the parts we sell. If we don't have a part currently in stock, we will try to offer the name and phone number of another supplier who might be able to help with that part. Tony's Parts is always willing to offer any kind of technical help to our customers in any and all aspects of their car.

If you haven't done business with us here at Tony's Parts before, we hope you will give us a try!"

To me now, I'm sorry I commented.
Good luck Bruzilla, I truly hope you get satisfaction.

My dad dealt with Tony and he is a stand up guy!!!! Give him a chance!

Hi
someone just alerted me of this thread
unfortunately we are closed today and tomorrow and are away from the shop

So I will be going on the best of my recollection and typing on my phone in a moving vehicle so please bare with me

First off im sorry to hear that you're not happy with the shipping cost and time but I'll do my best to explain

If I remember correctly your order was shipped ups ground
I believe its a three day transit time from Delaware to Florida
so you probably will be receiving it today

In regards to the cost. While the rod doesn't weigh much. I believe it's in a 17"x5"x5" box

Like most shipping companies cost I

I hear what you're saying, er... writing, but to me it's like when you order something on ebay and the vendor gets your order out right away, it's properly packed, it's tracked, it arrives safely, and it's exactly what you expected. I am thrilled to give them very positive feedback.

But then every once in a while I buy something and they mark it as shipped even though all they've done is gotten a shipping number, it doesn't get to a shipper for three or four days later, the packing sucks, and luckily the item is as described. Does this person deserve to be rated the same as someone who does it right the first time? No. Yet, you enter neutral feedback and they make it sound like you're damning them.

I've come on here and praised quite a few vendors who've done it right the first time. I've even contacted vendors who I thought were getting a bad rap because of a misunderstanding so they could come on here and explain themselves. I'm not condemning Tony's, I'm just saying I am not pleased with the service I've gotten so far, and if that rod isn't in my mailbox when I get home today I'm gonna be really unhappy.

As for hiding shipping costs, yeah, I know that happens. Most vendors on ebay that offer "free shipping" are rolling their shipping costs into the item cost, and I get that. I also get that the item will get shipped UPS Ground and will take a week to get to me, which I view as you get what you pay for. But if you're going to charge me full price for a part, and hit me with a top-shelf shipping charge, that item better be on my doorstep in three days tops. If it doesn't you don't deserve my business... but that's just my opinion. :)

Like most shipping companies cost is based not only on weight but the size of the box

In regards to you not receiving a tracking number
if you would have asked we would have gladly provided one to you

In regards to you thinking that it was sent express
an overnight letter cosst about $25 today

If you have any more questions or concerns please contact us on Monday and ill be happy to try to help

Btw
we ship 98percent of our orders taken with 24 hours

If your order was taken online you automatically would have gotten a tracking number. But because your order was taken over the phone we didn't have your e-mail address

I'm sorry but I don't get the mentality of bashing a business online without first contacting the business and giving them a chance to make things right.

Especially for something as trivial as not having a part in 4 days when no formal confirmation of rush or priority shipping was confirmed.

If you're really that anxious it pays to ask "when will this be shipped and could you send me a track # please"

I'm with Tony and the rest here Bru as I think you are slightly missing the boat. I'll give you an example:

I recently found and purchased a Belt Line Trim piece for the driver's door on my '66 Ply Sat. The Vendor was Great Lakes MOPAR up in Michigan. I am located in Cali so the shipping costs can vary according to distance and conveyance/shipper used. The part was being sold and listed through eBay for opening bid of $100.00. Shipping was listed at a Flat Rate charge of $45.00. These parts are extremely rare and hard and most difficult to find. They are also quite expensive. I am trying to put together a back up set for either sale in the future or if an emergency comes about with my ride. Anyway I digress...I bid and won it at the $100.00 amount and sent off the total payment of $145.00. Both myself and GLNOS used Pay Pal for the transaction. I got confirmation of the receipt of monies and awaited response for the shipping information. All I got was a notice that it had been shipped. No tracking as it was. I received it in a matter of 4 days...good timing...and noticed that it had been shipped Priority USPS/Signature Required and the postage amount was for $23.00 and some change. WTF!!! That amount was far less than what I had paid. So I contacted the vendor and he has agreed to refund the difference...still waiting at this time...of $21.00 and some change. Now I know that this really isn't any where near what you are going through but still I feel that you are expecting way too much when it comes to what customer service really and truly is about. Tony I have no doubt will get it sorted out for you. After all he is only human and does have a rather large operation he over sees daily if not weekly. So cut the guy some slack and exercise a little bit more patience as I have no doubt that it will get worked out in the end. You are just acting a tad bit un-realistic and immature in your overall expectations of this and by coming here and venting so quickly as you have, you really don't have the proverbial leg to stand upon as of yet!!!...Just My 2 Cents is all...cr8crshr/Tuck

Great Lakes Mopar screwed me out of $2,000.00. Sold me the wrong parts and half of them never made it to me. Claimed he shipped the parts out, but could not give me tracking numbers. I had to put the incorrect parts on eBay for a huge loss as I did not trust sending them back to him for a refund as I paid with a credit card. Stay away from Great Lakes Mopar. Tony, in my experiences with him, is a great vendor although he can be a touch rude if you do not speak his Mopar language as fluently as him.
