Transmission kit ripoff

Thanks for the info Doug.... I was just attempting to inform FBBO members.......and get ragged on.

I can go home and listen to that!!!!!!!!!

TO 1967coronet440: Regardless what the description of the vendors says, IT IS the same kit....Summit part # PIO for PIONEER...PIO-751049

Thanks for the heads up, you were actually contributing something positive to this forum and I for one appreciate it... Pay no mind to the smart asses lol

I suppose I didn't get my point across... What I was trying to point out is Summit, Rock Auto and probably others are selling a $99 transmission kit for $340+. Just trying to warn others about it.
To Mopar 3 B ... Quite: to be silent... Quit: to stop. To Hanover Mopar... I did not expect a free lunch
Um... Quiet

It's actually Quiet.

Your suspicions should have been aroused by the wildly different pricing of the item between three major players in the market.
Cheap is not always better or even the same.

How do you know this? Have you checked with the other supplyers? Or is this just a rant over part numbers and a non confirmed price difference? If your going to bad mouth suppliers you better supply the proof.

The thread had the proof. If you compare the kit from Oreilly (link was provided) and the kit from Summit (link provided by someone else), the 2 kits have the same part number and the same UPC. To me, that's the same item. And the price was $99.99 vs $343.97 from Summit. Swill73 was just giving us a heads up. Don't know why everyone is ragging on him. Good job Swill73 !!!

Getting quotes on a transmission rebuild for my 2xx,*** miles A904. From a well reviewed shop in my area I got quoted in the $1750 range. When asked how much of that is in parts they said about $500 depending on what the transmission needs. If this Pioneer rebuild kit contains all the necessary plates, bands, seals etc for a complete rebuild then what's the deal?!

Is that with a new torque converter? You can get a fresh rebuilt 904 from A&A for about $1100

Ouch! They're jacking you....they must not want to mess with it. Find someone else..or are they expecting to remove and reinstall it for you?

Yea I noticed when shops don't want to mess with a car this old they'll just pull some extravagant price out of their ***.

Yeah. That's an unreasonable price in my opinion if you are pulling it out and taking it to them. If you are planning to take the car in, and drive it home when they're finished then that's probably a quite reasonable price..

Had my pushbutton 727 done two years ago for just under $700. That included a new torque converter.

Overhaul kit 55.00
Band 32.00
Clutches 40.00
Clutches 29.60
Bushing 8.00
Bushing 5.10
Filter 12.00
Torque Conv. 190.00
Total parts 371.70
Labor 285.00
Tax 39.41

Total 696.11

The $500 would be in parts only. The rest is for the labor which includes removing, rebuilding, and reinstalling it. I suppose if they foresee needing a new torque converter the parts price isn't that far off?

And with how these bids usually go they'll quote using cheap non performance oriented parts. I wonder what they'll quote me if I let them know that I want a light performance build.

You're paying for them to unhook everything and move what needs to be moved even if it's not trans related(exhaust if there's a crossover in the way, starter etc..) if you were to yank it and re-install it yourself you'd shave maybe $700 at least off that quote

A little late, but best bet would have been, from a trans parts house, and get a master overhaul kit. Think the last one I bought was $120, included steels, clutches, bands, and so on.

Try "Trans parts online". Less than $130 for everything. I upgrade and use Alto frictions and Kolene steels for a little more $. The only bushing normally replaced is in the pump. Ocassionally the tail shaft bushing. Steels can be reused if they're not hot spotted. Never needs a rear band either unless it's broken. Been using their stuff a few years now in my race car, no issues.
Doug

The main things that wear out are the sealing rings, o rings, fiber discs, and gaskets. I have re used the steel discs if they weren't burnt, the bushings can be purchased separately if needed, as well as the bands. The pan seal and filter come in a separate kit. The complete kit from Summit probably contains the bands and discs, at that price. Call them to confirm this.

I replaced my steels...
