All, I am looking for feedback on the Lunati Voodoo 268 cam in a 440. The set up I am building is 10.2:1 compression using JE pistons, Edelbrock RPM heads (cleaned up), Heddman elite headers, 4 wheel power disc brakes, 727 and 3.23 gears. The car is a 1966 Coronet 500. I would appreciate feedback from those who use or have used this grind. The goal is to drive the car on the street with adequate vacuum and good mid range power.
Thanks

I have never used a Lunati cam but worked in a high perf store that sold them I have heard plenty of customers say the only thing they would use them as are door stops, and are defects department definently showed that, just my 2 cents. Steer clear. Also would go 3.55 gears.

Ben;thanks for the info. That was one of my considered grinds(or the next step up);I have heard some folks refer to them as "VooDon't" cams. My combination would be similar. Curious about the lack of performance;Lunati has had a good rep for years. I'm looking now at some Hughes grinds, now that they offer three-bolt pieces.

Looks like we need a camshaft thread-oh boy;another major can of worms opened...

I don't know where the haters are getting that info. Most people love the 268, most guys have positive things to say.

Maybe the people that dislike them broke them in improperly. . .

Valid point;perhaps why many brands get a bad rep. Since we all know that it's the combination, not just the cam that makes it work,I'm curious as to what other reasons there are to "hate" on the VooDoo grind(s). Has MM or MA magazines ever done a cam comparison(for equivalent spec hydraulic units) in years past?

Another interesting aspect to this is the varied recommendations for similar cams(i.e.;"268","272",etc) as far as stall speed, gear, cylinder pressure, etc. Some serious variance from one manufacturer to the next on similar-spec shafts.

Hey Ben,could you elaborate on what defects you encountered, and the frequency. I don't want to encourage a bash session, just curious.

I have a friend who was actually a N.A.S.A. engineer who frankly is the most **** engine builder we have ever met, He said the issues all vary, flat lobes, power bands all over the place from advertised, warped from Lunati,as we did get all our merchandise direct from all the companies, there camshafts apparently chip real easy,I would not say everybody would have terrible luck with them.I am just saying when one of the best engineers I have ever met says steer clear we tend to take his advice the man is literally a damn rocket scientist, with all the credentials to prove it although he is very modest,Like I said was'nt a week that went buy we didnt have a handful in defects and not having personally inspected all the cams myself I would just not personally take the risk.I would go mopar purple, comp, crane,Isky, hughes before I ever tried lunati. The Mopar purple have a real good rep out here for the cost, never got one back either, like I said I am very budget conscious but would not take the risk.
