Waking up the beast

Leak from the bellhousing

The good news is this time around should be way faster!

u mentioned a better intake and carb suggestion, i would keep the two 500 edelbrocks and get the edelbrock ch28 dual quad intake and gasket match it to the heads, its a lot better intake than the offy u have and u can still get the cool factor look out of it! i bet the edelbrock is worth close to two tenths or more, i know because ive done this before . the torque range is awesome on the intake as well as going higher in the rpm band in high gear, hope this helps u!

it's fixed. Apparently, the pump seal that was in my trans was a newer style seal. It stuck out of the trans about 1/8" further than the older style one. It was hitting where the hub was welded to the converter. Changed the seal to an older style one and took down a high spot on the weld and that did it. Back in business. I'll be going to Lebanon Valley tomorrow to embarrass one superstockracer.

Howd the test drive go? Where'd the converter put your rpm?

Unfortunately, it was a timid test drive. It's pouring out so I decided that I would learn from my mistake of almost thirty years ago when I wrecked my Hemi Roadrunner in the same conditions. Not this time!!!!!!!!!

have fun & good luck, curious to hear how the new set-up works with all the rest of the stuff...

Did you do the single 4bbl intake & {good Holley/Quckfuel} carb swap yet ?? or just gathering info still

No change in basic setup except for the converter. A little disappointed today. The track prep wasn't too good for starters. I think I need to learn to drive with the converter also, but it seems the combo might not be right for me. After a few runs, I got a little bit better. My best time with the stock converter was 12.24@ 113.74, shifting at 5500 and going through the traps the same. Best 60 ft. time was around 1.91. Today, the best time I could ,manage was 12.60@ 106.60. I also should mention that I had shifting problems. Probably needs adjustment. The car really wanted to launch, but spun on every pass. lowered tire pressure as much as possible,
played with shock settings etc. That being said, I managed to knock almost .2 off my 60 ft. time. Even spinning. 1.76 and the car going sideways in first and second. That sounds fixable, but needed to shift at 5800 rpm to get through the trap at 6000. I think too much rpm for my setup. Maybe a step down to 3.73 rear gears? I don't know. Maybe I need a little more time with the converter to figure it out. The last run I went through the traps at 5800, but I don't know where I shifted at the beginning of the run. I'll play with this setup for another month and see what happens.

that old 1.91 - now 1.76 60ft is good for about .3 tenths on the big end, should be at-least 11.90's are you getting enough weight transfer, to get traction/hook with the drag radials...

I needed about 5''s of front end lift to get the old M/T 315 drag radials to hook "at all" @ 16psi IIRC, with the rear shocks {Lambs double adjustable, front & rear} set pretty damn soft, only like 3 clicks compression, so the car would lift the front & squat in the rear, with-out hitting the tires way too hard {I had a completely different combo thou, 479ci, 3520#'s w/3.73:1 ran the best mph, but gave up a little 60' times, about a tenth & a 1/2 over the 3.91:1 - 4.10:1's very little change between them 2, my 3800 converter that flashed to 4200 rpm when I nailed it, worked way better with the 3.73:1's than any other gears, I also had CalTracs}...
just spit-balling, throwing stuff out there...

you'll get it, it takes some fiddling/tweeking some times...

IMHFO use a test & tune day is the best way, make lots of 330" runs first, get the car to work & hook, then worry about getting the rest of the way down track...

take lots of notes, keep a detail log...

keep track of everything, shocks, tires, tuning, launch RPM, temps, including track & weather conditions too, it all can have a drastic change in performance from day to day...

What was the weather diff between the best and current runs?

Regardless of ET, where the f did 7 mph go?!?!

Very likely might not like to RPM. Have a chassis dyno near you?

Thats what I was going to ask ? Where did all the mph go. I mean 113 can get you in the 11's with a good 60 ft but it wont get in the 11's with 106 mph. Do you know what hurt the mph so much ? Ron

I have 90/10's in front and 9 way rear. Was adjusting the rears along with air pressure in tires. Started with 18 psi and ended with 12. I felt the car squat, but don't know how much transfer I got.

Weather was definitely warmer than when I made my best runs, and also the track prep not as good. It seemed that even the fast cars were off on speed and e.t. Not as much as me though. The air itself was probably about the same.

I don't know of any chassis dynos around here, but was thinkink about having it done when I go to Carlisle. They usually have one there.

Wish I knew. Maybe the driver. This was the first time out with anything other than a 4 speed or a stock converter. Hopefully just need to get used to it.

Hey bob, there's a chassis dyno on the road down near raceway park. Not sue if it's old bridge or englishtown.

It's like a 2 bay repair shop on the right hand side couple miles before the turnoff for the track.

I'll have to look around. There has to be one a little closer than that. If not, I can wait for Carlisle. Thanks for the heads up.

Call Bruce's speed shop. he has a chassis dyno and close to you. money well spent.

Ya gotta paint a white stripe on a rear tire and have someone video your launch so these guys can help you more. And besides, I wanna see what they say!
