Waking up the beast

Last outing at the track, I went backwards. The air is not nearly as good as it was earlier in the spring so I'm hoping that is part of the problem. The one problem I know for sure I have is my tires are gone. I lost e.t., mph and 60 ft. Early this year I was running 11.3's @ 118 mph with 1.57 60 ft. times. The last couple times out my BEST was 11.70@113 with 1.62 60 ft. I went to test n tune at Island this past Friday. First pass with mufflers and air cleaners was 11.95. Next pass I took them off and went 11.75. I did a big burnout and managed a 1/10th better 60 ft. time. Made a third pass and the car broke up at higher rpm's. I was going to jet and retime after that pass but it was dark and the track was only open for another half hour. I have 2 carbs so I didn't have the time, so I packed up and drove her home. Looks like our race is going to be rained out for this Saturday so maybe another shot at test n tune before the next race. Maybe some new tires for the race as well. we'll see.

4 tenths seems like a lot, but not knowing what the corrected alt. was that could have been .2-.3 and .1 for the tires? Fuel maybe?

DA the first time out was 618 ft.
Next time out at the same track was 2230 ft.

I stole this from Amish-Bobbys' subaru that we scrapped yesterday. I plan on installing it in the GTX today. I think this is going to greatly help how the car is running. It seems as if my car is much more susceptible to air changes than others I race with. If the rain holds off again, I'll be at the track tomorrow.

So I took the old grocery-getter to tnt today. Made my first passes with the wideband connected. First pass was [email protected]. afr read 13.8. Next pass I pulled some timing out and it went 11.73 @ 113.13. Picked up a tenth and some mph. AFR was the same. I made a jet change for the next pass and the AFR went to 12,5. My et went to 11.80 and mph was 113.30. The DA for the day was at 1791ft. After putting those numbers in , the corrected et/mph was 11.49@ 115.70. So, I don't know what I learned here other than I need to get those edelbrocks off of there. They seem way too sensitive to atmospheric changes. My best time was this spring when I went 11.32@ 118. The DA was about 300 that day. I also have to figure in that I need tires. My 60ft. times are off a full tenth. Maybe next week I switch over to the Victor/Holley combo .

O hello

New stickey Mickeys installed and the Victor 440/ Holley back in place. Racing with Nendra tomorrow. Going to see what she does. You're going down w8 avenger!

The D/A or track conditions aren't killing 5 mph. I run Eddy carbs. They are not sensitive to D/A. Killer air 9.11@147, Really bad air air 9.28@145. I think it's wounded.

Good luck at the NENDRA race

how many rounds she have on her now ?
Have you done a leak-down test ?
It will help to show you to see what your rings & valves are doing,
how good of a seal you still have...
You could have washed/glazed the cylinder-walls down,
especially if it was fat for or over a long extended period of time,
Maybe she could need a freshen-up ??,
hone/glaze-breaker & possibly new rings do bearings too while your in there,
especially if you want the best performance out of her, you can do it in the car if need be...

Race cars need to be freshened up from time to time, street cars are a different animal...

Anyway not to be a buzz kill...LOL

Nothing wrong with trying the Victor/Holley combo either, it couldn't hurt...

What size Eddies do you run? Maybe because mine are only 500's they are more sensitive?

So, I ran the Victor Holley combo today. (By the way, I won the race) :) The DA was just a little better than it was last week. We had a stiff headwind but I managed my best time ever. I ran 11.31@ 116.40. with an 11.37, 11.39 and 11.49(first pass) . Maybe the intake along with the small Eddies were choking with the high DA. I previously ran 11.32 @ Island in the spring with the DA at 300 ft.

Thanks, Bud. I'll be shooting for another low ET tomorrow. Will post tomorrow.

I was out racing with Nendra yesterday and learned a few thing. I also made my fastest pass to date with the DA being at 2700 ft. (just ignore the reaction time on the first slip. Nothing to see here!) I'm pretty confident now that my dual quad setup was much tooo sensitive to atmospheric conditions. With the Victor/ Holley setup, I have consistently been in the 30's . I have also been struggling with my 60 ft. times. The best I could manage has been 1.60 even with new tires. I had been at 11.57 with older tires. But I think I found the problem. I went to adjust the shocks to see if I could eliminate some of the twist in the car and help my 60 ft. times. after adjusting, I found there was no adjustment. The car is just bouncing in the back. Both shocks are gone and my XHD springs are starting to bend in the other direction. We haave a couple weeks now in between races so I'm going to be looking for some of the older ss springs and buy new shocks for the rear. I don't have a lot of money to spend but I'm looking for suggestions on shocks. What do you guys think?
