Which roller cam should I use. I'm thinking about building a 512 fuel injected stroker. I want it to be streetable enough. I'll be using 440 source heads with port work. I would like to be in the 650 horse range.

do a search, you'll find alot of opinions. mine being for a solid roller for that kind of power.

With the bushed lifters that are available now, we are running more solids than ever, even on the street.
Isky told me this week, that their EZ roll Redzone lifter is good for 20,000 street miles. Couple this with a high quality spring, proper detail prep on them and good retainers and the problems of the past are non-issues.

For an extra few hundred bucks, I may never run a needle bearing roller again.

PM Propwash. His combo is pretty mild and makes ~620 if I remember correctly...

I feel if you are going to use a roller cam, go with a solid lifter roller. The simpler the better. You wont have to deal with hyd lifter pre load, pump up, etc. Less moving parts, as you dont have a lifter plunger in there to deal with.

Ok I'll say it. I'm the weirdo who does things wrong and runs a hydraulic roller cam with solid roller lifters with the stealth heads :) Only had to adjust them once in two years and barely at that :) Makes good foot stompin power as well and no pre load even better may wipe a lobe some day but oh well lol

So Solid it is then. I've been told I could run in the .600's on lift and .240's @ .050 and still have vacuum to run brakes. I think with a solid roller i'd like to have more mileage than 20,000 out of it before it craps out.

If it's any help I just did the conversion up front and have 15" of vac and they work fine. unless your pumping them over and over or doing a panic stop 3 times in a row then you have problems especially at low rpm lol

I could just do the hydroboost thing. I just want to be able to run my efi set-up because I already have it.

Crane, Isky and Comp for sticks but I like the idea Rev Ronnie is talking about ISKY bushed lifters. I would use a Solid roller and Oil thru pushrods on Hemi, it works nice.

The only reason I wouldn't want o run flat tappet cams is because I think the oil we have today isn't as good for them as we need. Also the ramp rates are to high for my horsepower goals. I want 650hp so i'm probably going to have to change to the solid roller cam. Any suggestions on cam specs?

I wonder what's up with the hydraulic rollers that they don't work so well on these 440's? I built a 408 that made 500 hp with one that wen 226/234 @.050 550 580 lift. I'm just wondering but could it be the valve spring everyone is having trouble with rather than the lifters. I was looking at a lunati kit with springs 231/239 kit or a 243/251 both running 1.6 rockers and around .600lift. If they got the spring right wouldn't that be enough and more streetable???

I do like the idea of a solid roller and performance but I would like to power tour it or take it across country. I want less maint.

Is there anyone running a lunati voodoo hyd roller?

I had a solid roller in a 493. Didn't like the noise or the maint. Next one will be hyd roller, but it will be a low rpm torque monster.

Thanks big block. I'm thinking more and more about the hydraulic roller. I'm liking the Lunati voodoo series. I'm running a crane hyd roller in my 408 bbc. Have run another Lunati in a 496 but it was too big and that was 15 years ago the only reason I didn't like it.

What Lunati Voodoo series are you looking at with a Hyd Roller?

Actually, that is a great way to do it. I was just talking with Eric at Erson and he says the .375” hyd roller lobes work excellent with solid rollers and a tight lash.
The thing is, they are actually quite easy on components. You won't have any lobe failure anytime soon.

My question would be is how does the hyd roller lifter handle spring pressure. Lunati says no more than 350 open for a hyd flat tappet. If you want a radical cam with aggressive ramp rates you may have to use a solid.
