To me they mean nothing, unless doing a 'concourse' restoration.

Ditto, my 73 had similar marks, but they are long gone and axle looks much better with a nice power coating on it.

I think the X means that the fluid was done and ready to go from the factory. As for the #'s, I only seen these on military or police equipment. Maybe the rear came from a cop car?

First one is probably date code, there doesn't seem to be a definite guide on these yet, may look white but look for traces of pink because that is usual protocol. Last number looks like a 6. To recreate you can cut a stencil or have a rubber stamp made for best result. Second one is the axle code that is on your build sheet assuming the axle is original to car. Third mark is an 8 commonly found on rears and it would be a mustardy yellow. There are details on the center and could be yellow on one wheel stud to denote heaviest part of the axle. You may want to do further research on Moparts under the resto forum. Most people look to personalize their car and not preserve the history of it. Roger Gibson also has good info on his website.

X for filled with fluid, rest are assembly line inspector #'s of person who checked it off. that' my best guess lol Call Mark Worman @ GYC he'll know.

Numbers on my 8-3/4"

DSCN0493.jpgI am working on a U-code 73 GTX/Road Runner. Original 440 engine-tranny does not match. I am finding markings on the rear axle assembly similar to yours. I've attached the legible markings on the carrier member but the tube markings are illegible but look very close to the same font and mustard yellow as your pictures. These are on/near the axle perches and could be axle part numbers?????? I think earlier models had taped part numbers wrapped around the axle housing. I am looking to restore to as close to original as possible as the car I have has some originality I'd like to preserve. I am looking for any info for help to replicate. See attachments.
