What did I do wrong here (HEI Conversion)

Thanks. Hey will you be doing this mod on the new Taurus?
Looks like the "seat of the pants" engineering group is hard at work.....applying the "guess and by golley" principles.......try this fancy gizmo works at releasing the 50+ hidden HP, lurking within the engine.....and the GM HEI MODULE is the key to unlocking the elusive hidden HP......what's wrong with the way Chrysler intended ......including the original "points" system........

Hey its a hobby Bob! If it was fixed I would have nothing to do...If it aint broke send it to me and I will futz with it till it is!

We get it.

Anything other than a completely stock vehicle, is pointless , dumb , waste of time and money.

Anyone that changes their car looking for some increased power , reliability , accessibility, performance of any kinda is ... just trying to impress somebody, or heard something from a buddies, brothers, uncle who had the fastest car on the block.

We have all heard your boring old rants, anything but stock is wrong.

Then there is the real world , where people enjoy modifying their cars, they realized that sometimes there are things that can be improved on from a 50-60 year old design and technology. There are people that don't care what others think , because it's their car and they are free to do with it as they please.

Not only that, there is an entire online community that also enjoys this as well. In fact, belive it or not there is a multi billion dollar aftermarket industry , that has put more money , research and effort into improving " the original system " than you will ever understand.

So if your just coming into this thread to start another one of your pointless , unrelated rambles and throw out random useless calculations or formulas........ spare us. Your either here to help with the original question or your not.

Perhaps there is an alternator belt that needs to be calculated, so that you can go to the store and buy the same one that I measured with a piece of string

It must be difficult to go thru life with a closed mind.

........perhaps it's just that you do not understand the engineering principles and calculations involved in making a determination or as it noted, you must subscribe to the "guess and by golly" method, rather than doing it correctly the first time....but ......it's your $$$ to waste .....which is your prerogative........there's no need to criticize my perspective just you don't understand or believe in engineering......

Ok Ill make this real simple.......

Is there a way to improve on the original Point style system. That may be any of the following, reliability, maintenance, accessibility, performance or any other aspect of the system ?? Yes or No?

The kettering design (points and condensor) certainly held the top spot for a long run.
Around 60 years or so.
But the notion that it couldn't be improved upon is simply not true.
Otherwise all the cars sold today would employ that system.

GM sold millions of vehicles with the HEI and it proved to be quite reliable with high output.
It was arguably better than the Chrylser setup but I've run several of the old style electronic ignitions for many miles.
My first car had 192,000 with a pickup coil and a ballast resistor replacement at two separate times.
The ECU module was original when I sold the car.

No need to criticize your perspective ? Did you not just come into this thread mocking the setup, and people that are involved in it?

So its ok for you to criticize? How hypocritical can u be ?

I never criticized anything, other than your personality . You want to keep your point system, all the power to ya .

Other people want to try or are interested in different setups. I know , hard to belive for someone that is " close minded. The only close minded person is the one that thinks they are always right .

My car had its original module, over 50 years and 150k miles, was working fine. I swapped because I wanted to play with an EFI system I picked up. Their instructions said I needed an ignition system that did not have a ballast resistor. Thats it. No expectations that it would add 50hp, just looking for some entertainment time from something i enjoy.

Thanks to everyone who responded with assistance. I'm up and running.

Please perform the celebratory burnout.

Just where do you get off criticizing anything about my personality ??? Just because we have differing attitudes and aptitudes.......and, it seems as if you cannot or do not recognize sarcasm....this is not my fault.....perhaps you should learn the difference. I choose to do things and express myself differently than you......which does not make me wrong.....anymore than your opinion is the correct way. Hypocritical....ha.....perhaps, do you even know the definition of the word or its application ???? The same people keep asking the same question about the same thing.....re coil's, ballast resistors, ECUs, and what happens when they mix match components and don’t think or "out think" the engineers origional design, with something better.....as seen in some magazine article, an UNCLE TONY'S expose, then bitch when it doesn't work as expected........talk about being Hypocritical......that's it personified.......Maybe you should be preaching to that choir.......just my opinion......

Yawn............... anyway I can't be bothered, have the sand box to yourself.

I'm glad that the OP has fixed his problem and is moving on to his next project.

Look forward to helping him and other members if I can.

Hope it works for you, I have read that these modules want 0.5 resistance coil though, but I am just experimenting myself.
Bob is right, mixing/matching these ignition components is a crap shoot.

Thanks for the heads up, I wasn't tracking that. I was a bit gun shy to reorder another Pertronix 44011 so I looked for one that specifically said I could use it without a ballast resistor. Hopefully the additional heat sink I added to the mount helps keep it cool. If it burns up, I have a spare and will look into alternative solutions.

Are talking about a heat sink for your coil or the one you added to my 3d print for the module ?

Yes. But I ended up exchanging the 40111 (1.5 ohm) for another Pertronix 44011 (0.32 ohm). After a bunch of reading last night, it seems that it should work ok with the HEI module and no ballast resistor. The reading also suggested that the 1.5 ohm coil would shorten the life of the module. I'm going to just trust that the shipping damage to my first unit was the root cause the failure of both the coil and the module. The 44011 gets installed tomorrow. I already swapped to an AC Delco D1906 HEI Module from the Delphi unit.

I made up a set of Accel 8mm wires today and went for an hour cruise. Idles and runs nice now, turned out my #6 wire had a failed plug end and was barely attached to the plug.

Next project is to replace the engine and under dash wiring. At that point I will switch over to the factory plug on your 3d module and get rid of all my temp wiring.

Fabbed up this mount today out of a big piece of heat sink I had in my scrap aluminum bin, and moved the module off of the distributor to the firewall. It should not be getting hot now. I would like to eventually replace the E-coil with a cannister type but hey if I get more than 250 miles out of this module I will be grinnin for sure!
Whaddya think Bob? I know you get a big kick outa this kinda ****.
