What happened to 68-69 chargers ?!

So thanks to kern dog and every other 68-69 charger owner/member here now I catch myself looking at chargers more and more (only 68-69 the ones before and after I don’t care for sorry)

Id buy one if I could find a decent 68-69 for 20-25k which I know that’s not gonna happen but I can dream.

Anyways the question is ?

What happened to 68-69 chargers that they’re all rusted out and missing so many parts ?
Did everyone who owned a 68-69 charger just not give a crap ?

the 66,67, even 70-74 which I hate and see are in decent shape.
You can find decent examples of those complete and running but most 68-69 are crapped out

examples

Everyone one of those cars requires a master fabricators certificate and bank account with no limits.

the 70 has the same body style

A friend just sold this one yesterday for 40K. Matching numbers 440 4-speed, Dana, R/T SE, original paint, some rust, doesn't run, but not locked up.

My offer was short at 25K.
Just crazy Charger prices.

Thanks for posting that. I bought one of those a few years ago for a lot less. The seller thought she knew what she was doing.

No go 68-69
70 has different doors, fenders and grill

And hood. They also changed the tail panel and the lenses are different. They went from vacuum actuated headlight doors to electric motors. I love the vacuum system!
One of the things that makes these cars expensive is the one year only parts. They also didn't make a lot of Chargers and as someone already mentioned there is no crossover model you can turn in to a Charger.

I paid 17k for my 68 running (barely) and mostly complete in 2017. It's the most I ever paid for a project car. Needed usual trunk, rear window, tail panel, valances, etc. Floor pan and frame rails good condition. I bet that it would go for 30k today. I'm in for 78k, and almost done. I went nuts, but it's my dream car I could never afford as a youngster.
Actually all the B-bodies bumped up in the past 2-3 years. Charger just led the way. I use my GTX as an example alot here. Not only B-bodies. But A&E bodies site too. I bought mine 3 years ago next month for $21k. To replace a very simular GTX I had so many years ago that I had to sell. The car was near what I was looking for. I didn't want to pay numbers matching prices. But wanted period correct. Wanted very nice driver quality. Not wanting to pay show level quality. A car that didn't need immediate attention, but room for improvement? I found the car after nearly 2 years of searching. 2 miles from Canadian boarder. The car was as close to my target as possible? I only got the last 25 years of history of the car. And I know it sat in a pull barn of a Chevy lover for 15+ of them years. (But started and moved around a bit every 6 months or so. The guy just didn't like Mopars. He wanted to sell me a '69 SS Nova for same price? Very similar condition. With a peppy original 350/350 HP under the hood.. I said. "I'm here for the Plymouth." What nether of us knew was much on the first owner? The car is not close to numbers matching. D32 auto trans code. But car has an 18-spline 4-speed trans and a Dana rear with 3.54 gears (Which it wouldn't if was an automatic.) Interior not even close to fender tag. From what I can tell? Someone put this car together at least 25 years ago from 2 GTX and some Sport Satellite body panels. (Fenders definitely.) The original owner passed years ago. I made purchase and drove over 250 mi home. It ran like a champ. (Actually running better last half of trip.) I couldn't be more happy with my purchase.

Because of all the discrepancies? The car will never be $50k+ with a near stock performance package. But it was what I was hunting. Even the exterior color (Same as my GTX back in my day.) But because of the "discrepancies?" I have plenty of options. Leave alone and just enjoy? (With maintenance requirements. Lol.) Just putt to local small shows where she certainly doesn't embarrass herself? Or project to something more? Hemi upgrade? Though I find it tough to pull a very decent running 440 just for more performance and bling? (Let alone the engine cost and Hemi upgrade is not just a direct swap.)

in closing to PurePony? Keep the faith. (Quick walk around vid of car.)

I've loved the 69 Charger since I was in HS. Owning one is a dream come true. The 70's are ok but I found myself figuring that if I'm going to spend that much I might as well put it toward what I really want. I also learned to do a lot of stuff myself which saved $$ and because I care more about my car than a shop I did a much better job. I consider myself extremely fortunate to own one...
When I decided to get an R/T SE it took 1 1/2yrs to find one that was decent and hadn't been ruined.

My 2¢: These cars in those years are and have been in much higher demand than the other years you mention. Since I bought the first one they have only gone up in price and I am confident that they will keep going up. It's not enough to be rare, it's also one of the most beautiful body styles ever produced in my opinion. This is the epitome of industrial art, a masterpiece.

I found two cars I wasn't even looking for so keep looking. If you're expecting something to come up overnight, you're probably going to be disappointed.
This forum and YouTube have plenty of information that will help you do just about anything you need to do. It's time consuming but worth it in my opinion.

Fast and the Furious and Dukes of Hazzard happened... enough said. People think these years/model are gold and sadly, people pay top dollar for them. My dream car is a 68' Charger but for now I'm working with a 68' Coronet, which is a Charger to most people that dont know the difference...(if you know, you know), and it's been a fun learning experience in the world of Mopars. Excited to teach my daughter all about old cars with this car when she is old enough. I'll get my 68' Charger someday...

People ask me what a Coronet is. I tell them it's like a cousin to the Charger.

Just me, and boils down to personal taste,
but I think a '68 Coronet is a better looking car....

70s too. They may not go for quite as much. But they fetch serious money. Personally? I like the '69 the best. But that's just personal taste. The one cool feature of 70 is a 440-6 pack option. N/A for '68-'69.

The 70 Chargers are bringing the same money as 68 and 69 Chargers are these days.

Yup after resto he’ll probably be in it 75k or more

my up I’ll pass

Much, much more. See below......

If you don't mind me asking, when you bought the car, what did you originally estimate what the total restoration cost would be?

Unless there is something different on the inner structure that isn't seen (other than the lock button location), the doors are interchangeable between the three years.

Crazy thing is that he would be able to sell it for 75K when done. Not to many other body styles offer that payback.

The reason what you're finding is so rough is...everybody has already bought all the other ones.

They're popular.

I love my '70 - as noted above, basically identical to a 68/69 except for fenders (different bumper joints); hood (different leading edge because of the different bumper); quarters (I think same as '69 but '68s are different with the porthole marker lights); grille, and interior (seats and door panels, I believe).

Mom bought one new back in the day, and as much as I loved the Dukes growing up...I've always wanted a '70 like mom's (cousin totalled hers in '75 or '76). I finally got one...and I'm thrilled about it. Pricey? Depends. I got an unrestored original that's had one repaint (for unknown reason, every body panel is original)...for about what these "roller" projects are going for. Runs, drives, I drive it nearly every day...and I'll be driving it to Carlisle on Saturday.

Keep looking. "The One" is out there.

Supply << Demand

I think that sums it up.

Of course the 68-70 Charger has always been one of the most desirable along with the ‘70-‘71 E-bodies. People like us saw them and scooped them up, often gutting them for parts because they were “junk” (or slant sixes). In today’s world they would be considered great. The less desirable cars didn’t get noticed the same way and therefore survived untouched for longer.

What do you hate about the '70 models? The front bumper?

I like the 1970 Charger's better because of the loop bumper. The front end just looks cleaner. I can't say the same for 1970 Coronet vs. 1969. I bought a Super Bee in 1969. When the 1970's came out, I thought, "Whew, that was close!" . Just my personal preference. If we all liked the same thing, we would all be living at my house!

Let's not totally excuse that idea? What's for supper?

I'm going to take a look at a '69 Charger SE. Definitely not fully running. This guy had other cars that he hasn't moved much. He won't post price, thus I'm expecting the ridiculous. But until one looks?
