Okay, I'm new to this board, but I NEED help. Lifelong fan and owner of various MOPARs. I've found a 65 Coronet 500, oringinally a 383 4bbl auto car. Floor pans anr lower rear quarters need replaced, and it comes w/ a 440/727 that are torn apart. The owner wants ME to name a price because he claims not to know what is worth. He claims to have owned it since he was 17, now he's 53 and thinking he might not get around to it...and wants to buy something else. The 440 is a steel crank, but out of a truck. Somebody PLEASE ballpark this thing to me, I really like the car, but the more money I save, the less the wife yells at me.....Thanks!

Hard to say without pics. But the bottom line is it's worth whatever YOU are comfortable with paying.

Check through the cars for sale section. There have been several 65 Coronets for sale

You don't want my advise. I stay in the doghouse with all the stuff I buy.

I'll get a few pics tomorrow, I've got this weird feeling that I'm going to buy it though...

I really appreciate any input (other than what my wife has given me) Thanks! Pic coming soon.

does it run is it driveable. have you figured how much it will cost you to get it to that point how is the body will you be comfortable with it the way it is or are you going to want to get it repainted or even restored and to me most important is it a complete car as in all the chrome and trim parts are there some of that stuff can get very expensive or very hard to find if there is no running drive train and it needs the qaurters replaced or repaired along with the floor boards your starting to look at a lot just to get it driveable sounds to me like a $2000 car at most. last summer i saw a driveable but needed a resto 67 belv go for 3500 and it took a few months before it finally sold. that being said pics would help determine a value

if it doesn.t have the origanal motor that's a plus on your side.since there is rust on floors/quarters check the frame rails, that could be another plus for you depending on how bad of shape they are in.but not seing pics i would say in the ballpark at $1500-$2000 and see how he reacts to that.

This is a tough question to answer as I feel you must take the emotional and business aspects into account to determine car pricing. Too much emotion and your wife will yell at you because you spent too much for a car. Too much business angle and your wife will love you but you will never have a car. I suppose the correct answer is to push it right to the limit of the wife radar and back of a notch! Also remember it costs as much to paint a HEMI car as it does a 6 cyl car.

The first thing I'd do is look at similar model cars in good condition and see how much they sold for. Even an asking price is something to start with. Once you established that, back out the paint job and parts cost to get it running and looking good and the difference should be the core value - or there abouts.

Depending on condition of the body specifically. It sounds like mechanically its taken a part and 383 cars aren't exactly rare so unless its got a nicely redone body OR you can guarantee its solid (good luck) than I wouldn't offer more than five or six, depends on interior too. It also depends on if your gonna be doing the work your self or outsourcing most of it AND how much your willing to put in. If you've had multiple Mopars than your (assuming you have one) wife probably knows the deal with classic cars. In other words, she gets the time, money and effort it takes to restore one. I just reread your first post and if the floors and quarters need repair or replace and you cant do the work yourself I'm not giving him more than 3000 or 4 unless your have some kind of emotional attachment to that particular body style especially because '65 (I think, could be wrong) is a one year body style and because of that could be VERY difficult to acquire patch panels or replacements for and trim will also be a bitch to get. The extra drive train stuff is nice BUT truck 440's are a dime a dozen and your still gonna have to rebuild the thing. With that much work (some pics would be helpful) your looking at a 10 to 15 thousand dollar minimum to restore again depending on how much work you do your self.

Hope that helps!

Odd car. Has 500 emblems and tail lights, but I don't think the trim on the side is correct for a 500

The trunk is full of dash, trim and misc. , including the piece that is missing from the trunk (actually 2 of them and an extra set of taillights). Seats and door panels are present, No console or shifter though....bummer. The door panels and dash have a 500 on them, and the fender tag decodes as a Coronet Premium (I have a photo), but beyond that, I have no idea whether its actually a 500 or not. Thanks once again.

Maybe low-ball him, and throw it back in his court? But that is a gamble. You want a number to negotiate with, but not one that would insult him. And folks DO get insulted by some offered prices, even if it is correct for the car. They get this inflated idea in their heads, due to emotion, of what the car may be worth. Especially if they've had it a long time.

not knowing the gentleman selling the car its hard to say. you say hes had it now for over 30 years so im willing to bet he only paid a few grand if even when he bought it in good condition i would try to offer him 1000 worst case he laughs at you if so you play it off and negotiate from there like i said though not knowing the person is tough to call he may be one of those guys who thinks every item they own is worth their weight in gold then again he could be one of those who thinks your crazy for offering a grand

It's a factory "500". Fender badges are 500's too. Car has a lot of "hidden" rust! Rear windshield post, cowling (big reason for front floor rust). Plan on lots of sheet metal replacement. Throw a Grand at him, you can always get you money back out of it if it looks like it is too much for you to take on. :)
