Put on a brand new 16 volt light weight 16 volt battery with a 16 volt product engineering alternator. Fully charged it doesnt holsd a charge after cranking the car maybe 5,6 or 7 times.
have to charge it between rounds and have to be careful shutting it down after the stripe because the battery labors real bad.
I know the alternator is charging it because i watch the voltagew gauge and it goes up when i rev up the motor.
Are these battery's known to be problematic? or did i just get a bad one?

if you noticed i put on the diamondback carbs after making a few internal changes to them and i netted my best mph of the day. car left great no bogs and the car liked .119 secondary jets which i'm shocked.

I would call Turbo Start. You may have a bad battery or something is drawing and excessive amount of juice.
I know Turbo Start is going to tell you that the alternator is not going to charge the battery during the run because the alternator isn't running long enough to excite the battary. How ever the alternator will keep the voltage up durning the run so you don't have much voltage loss when your going down the track. They say an Alternator will not eliminate the need to charge the batterys.

When i put on my 12 volt optima yellow top, i can go a whole day w/o charging and race.with my jones 12 volt alternator.
There's something wrong.

Yha, I would call Turbo Start... There has to be something wrong with the Battery, unless like I said for some reason you have an excissive draw on the battery that you don't know about.

NOTHING has changed in my electrical system.

My money is on a bad battery,I run two yellow top optimas,no problems,no alternator either, don't have to charge between rounds but do it anyway.

I believe it's the green zip ties in the fuel lines...:eek:ops::BangHead:

If it likes 119 in the back, you probably need more fuel pressure- most likely can eliminate the weight screws from the rear and pick up some 60'

Tried that and it fell on its face. i put back all the weight as originally came on them and the car just flew. 1.25 60 foot and then a 1.36 on the back tires.
I'm at 6.5 on fuel pressure and it doesnt drop at all even at WOT.I ran .116 all day with a best of 9.06 @ 147.97 until i swapped out the edelbrocks to the dismondback with the larger jets. 9.02 @149 mph with 87% humidity.
I'm running a magnafuel prostar 500 w/ filter.
As you can see i put dual inlets so there's no starvation.
It was a pleasure talking to you on rthe phone and your advice was very helpful.
I love the carbs now!!
I am wondering if .119 in the primaries might also work.
The only enigma I have is the metering rod size now to really fine tune it.

try 7psi and I would try 119 in the front- leave the rod where you have them

damon thanks, going to go out next sunday and try the .119's in the primaries. will bump up the psi to 7 and see how it performs. the good thing is i use a altronics o2 alert and record all my runs for comparison and try to get my parameters around 12.8-13.1 A/F.
I'm betting 151 mph and 8.95 et at Island.now that i got the wheelstands under control.

Did you ever figure out you 16 volt battery issues?

Good deal , I ran them years ago (like pre-2000)with good success. Did you have a 16vlt alt & reg.?

yes i am running a 16 volt product engineering alternator with built in regulator. 1 wire. theres no reason for the battery to get run down after a few starts on the 1st pass after the whole weekend it was fully charged. i hold off till last minute to run pumps and fan.
i'm hoping its just a bad battery.

Definitely sounds like a bad battery. We run nothing but 16v (XS brand) batteries, no alternators, and don't have discharging issues like you're talking about. The new battery should solve your problem, IMHO.

spoke to turbo start today. they told me the lite weight battery doesnt recover as good as the standard 45 lb. battery 16 volt.
They said, to try the new battery 1st and if it doesnt work then they will figure out with me over the phone or give me the standard 16 volt battery.

Sounds like great customer service! XS floated us one of their new lightweights (L925-16A), but none of us has tried it yet. It's freakin' light, but our current cars have the suspension setup for their current heavier batteries and don't really want to mess with anything since the season has started. May throw it in the Coronet when it's done :) . Keep us updated!
