When Is Your First Day To Mow The Lawn?

I was doing seasonal prep on sleds today and parking them, would rather be cutting grass! Damn small wheel trailers really make a mess of the grass with 2 sleds on them, probably why I usually put them away in june. thought I'd get them done, not with out lots of cursing!Had to pull the tractor and trailer back on driveway with the truck. F me!

About time for my grass cutting to commence.

His and hers!

"Hey can you come over and get my mower, tune it up, sharpen the blade?" Sure, I have to do mine too. Change oil, new plug, air filter, sharpen the blade.

See the white showing through here and there? Eastwood Rust Encapsulator I painted on there three seasons ago!

I've never had troy-built equipment is there any specific reason someone would buy those mowers, any specific ingenuity, price point, part quality! they just look like a standard mower. love front wheel self propelled so easy to manipulate with one hand! have an ariens that may need to be replaced soon, basically the same!

I'm sure that there will be some who won't go outside to mow the lawn until the gooberment says that it's safe to go outside.

My neighbor was out mowing his grass this past weekend. I haven’t even gotten the leaves and branches cleaned up yet or the gutters.

I am in Missouri. some people are already but probably about 2 weeks yet for me. I dont live in town. I have changed the oil and gotten them ready.

Most mowers even riding mowers are built by MTD and are pretty much "generic" in nature. They change the design year to year so some parts won't be interchangeable. They make money off of selling parts and when the parts are not available they figure you'll just by a new mower. And most will only last a few years if not properly maintained. Throw away mowers I like to call them.

Troy Built were found at Lowes, they might have gone to Craftsman now. They go for a couple of hundred bucks when they are on sale to over four hundred for the walk behind. I've seen some over $700!

The one I have I got with the house when I bought it. Had it for a couple of years, used it at my friends house one day when hers took a crap and hit a tree root. Bent the crank shaft. Got lucky and found a used engine, complete, on CL for $50. Been useing it since then. I mainly use it for trimming close to things then use my 46" cut Troy built for the rest of the yard.

I bought the 46" rider from my friend's father who got fed up with it when a spindle locked up and threw a belt. He cussed it, went out and bought a new one. I got it for $200, replaced the bearings in the spindle, new belt. Tuned it up, sharpened the blades and I'm good to go.

It's a 22 horse, single cylinder with hydrostatic trans. I like it but I'm wanting to rig up some kind of power steering. Maybe electric steering from a Toyota or the like. I experience some fatigue with having RA.

you got a deal on that tractor for sure. 22hp sounds like a lot for single cyl., you sure! if your cutting dry property most of the time you could go to a narrower front tire, it might help "some" certainly not like p.s.! I have 2 x5 series deere 500/540 the 540 has p.s. and it's a world of difference!

Yes it's a single cylinder. Don't know who thought that one up but it works. Starting and idling you can feel it hammering but when you rev it up it smooths out and sounds normal.

A narrower tire is a good idea. I saw one video where a guy installed flat roller bearings under the "king pins" on the front axle. It's like a flat washer with roller bearings. I put a suicide knob on the wheel and that helps me with turning unless my wrist or hand is flared up. If it's not flared up it normally will be after mowing.

This past Tuesday, mostly to mulch leaves but some spots were high enough to mow.

Just cut mine today. It’s a ‘new’ yard and is mostly crab grass and clover with some turf area scattered around.

I watch ‘the lawn care nut’ videos on YouTube too - get some good info and a laugh or two in the process. He used to work for TruGreen so he’s pretty knowledgeable about lawn care.

While I’m no tree hugger I did do something out of the ordinary in regards to getting a lawn mower. I bought a Ryobi electric riding mower last fall, after doing quite a bit of research on it. Liked the idea of not having to fool around with a gas can, oil and filter, air filter, and replacement belts. I keep it charged up - hop on - turn the key and go! It is very quiet running around and the deck sounds like a big box fan when it is on. I’ve used it several times now and have no complaints. It uses 4 regular lawn tractor batteries as opposed to some sort of expensive lithium contraption, which was another plus IMHO. It is supposed to run 2 hours or cut 2 acres with fully charged batteries. I’ve cut my yard twice on a charge and still had around half a charge or so left in it. Right now I would recommend it if you’re looking for something to ride around on while cutting grass.

I figure in a week or so. Just starting to see a little greening and growth, though the weeds are growing already :cursin:
Supposed to get some 60 degree weather for the next week or so and rain.

I bought a new mower from Great States. It's a 18" 5-blade model. I plan to use it on the front yard which is only 1600 sq ft common Bermuda. It's at 2" right now. I had a load of topsoil delivered today. I bought a 36" level rake, as well. Once I spread that out the lawn will be nice and level. No more scalping the high spots.

I don't have a lawn :carrot:
my mower hasn't even been started since 2007

I don't need to mow

I get to spend my time, doing something I like instead :blah:
yard work isn't one of them :poke:

I have gravel everywhere or my Asphalt driveways
right up-to the easement & back/side fences, retaining walls or carports

it's a much better fire barrier up here, than grass

I get far cheaper homeowners/fire insurance because of it too

I have neighbors, their portion of fire insurance, has nearly doubled

albeit I have 40 acres right behind me of grass, big oak & conifer trees
they usually mow the fence lines, occassionally

:usflag:

I mowed my acreage on Sunday....garden bin got collected Monday.

Lawn was so dry, I ended up with so much 'dust' up my nose.....I hate the smell of dried dog **** as it puffs out the catcher.

Apparently it may not be anytime soon! We’re supposed to 8-12” of white stuff Thursday!
After being stuck inside and around the house so long it’ll be a heck of a day to build a snow fort and throw snowball at passing cars!

not mopar of course!

Leveling the front lawn. 5 yards of topsoil delivered yesterday. Using the Gorilla cart that has a dump bed helps a lot. I hired my neighbor's kid to help (getting too out of shape to do it alone). We hauled for 2 hours today. Soil is still a bit damp from the last rain. The rake will get here tomorrow. Once level, I'll spread Bermuda seed and rake it in. Chance of rain Saturday. That should kick start the seed and dissolve the larger clods.

No mowing here on the outskirts of Toronto, calling for snow showers tomorrow, though today is sunny and the grass is getting greener.
I wait until around May 1.

I need to do some of that to my backyard. Though I’m considering adding some landscaping/ seating area and a gas fire pit and get rid of some mowing.
