When Is Your First Day To Mow The Lawn?

Awesome...it's pissing down here now.....maybe not a drought-buster...but rain nonetheless.

I got the rider and the push mower serviced yesterday. I searched and found a longer spin on filter for the Kawasaki in the Deere rider. Much easier to replace than the other one. The longer one has a fluted can so a cup type filter wrench works perfect. Plus a little extra filtering and oil capacity is always a bonus.

I blew out a couple of discs in my back 3 years ago and stopped cutting the lawn myself. So, my Cub Cadet riding mower has basically been sitting in the shed unused for that long. I did winterize it, drained the gas, ran fuel with stabilizer with it. Now that my daughter and her fiance are sheltering back home with me instead of NYC, they volunteered to take care of the landscaping. So I pulled out the Cub Cadet, new spark plug, changed the oil, greased all the fittings, new battery ( the old one wouldn't hold a charge), added fresh gas and nothing, just cranked and wouldn't turn over. I opened up the carb and sprayed some starting fluid and it cranked right over but died when the ether was gone, so I knew it wasn't getting any fuel. I didn't have a new fuel filter so I thought maybe it was clogged but when I disconnected the hose on the outlet, got a hand full of gas. At that point, I knew the carburetor was probably gummed up. Got a can of gumout and a new filter at advance auto, disassembled, sure enough, sticky crap all over it. Half hour later, after cleaning and reassembly, that bad boy cranked right over !!!!! Just have to sharpen the blades and ready for my first cut in about a week or so. They already thatched the whole lawn by hand, gna fertilize tomorrow. Glad all I have to do is service the machine !!!!!!

:lol::lol::lol:

Mowed the front for the first time Saturday, coming in nice and thick. Also got an application of liquid aerator down and an app of milorganite fertilizer. Waiting on a set of new gator mulching blades to get delivered for the John Deere so I can mow the back, between the dog and kids it doesn’t look half as nice as the front but what can ya do.

Well, we actually got the 8-12” inches of snow Thursday into Friday! It’s now all gone and my yard is one huge lake! Nice weather! Raining and blowin like a banshee!

Been cutting for a month already out here, every week.
Old pasture is like that, you know...
I mow about 3 acres out of our total acreage out here, a little bit more along the county road that they seem not to be able to handle themselves too.
I've been "taming" an old pasture for a few decades now. It isn't your normal lawn for sure - the locals call it "Johnson grass". It turns into hay pretty darn quick if not kept down and it's tough enough to wear out mower blades over time.
If you keep it up, though, it looks nice enough.

I destroyed a few riding mowers at first, learned my lesson years ago.
My "mower" for the last 17 years or so is an excellent Massey-Ferguson "sub-compact" 3 cylinder diesel 4WD (made by Iseki) and I typically use a 5' finish mower pulled behind.
5 gallons of diesel gets me 2-3 mowings out here; I used to go through that much gas in one cutting on riders.

Apparently no time soon for me! Still brown with little hint of green in some places. 36 degrees and a couple of inches of snow on tap for tonight! Usually Snow this time of year helps grass green up faster but it’s frikin gotta warm up!

Mowed several times already. On Saturday it looked like it was snowing from all the apple blossoms falling down, making a white circle under the trees.

6 hours on the riding mower, but some of it is done for the first time. Tie down areas will have to wait another month to dry out. Guess I've gotta open that four letter word if we're not heading for camp.

Boy you really have some serious lawn up there. Doesn’t exist where I live. Love your land....

Last weekend was the first time up at my palatial NH retreat. No lawn to mow yet at the new house in MA.

I have to mow the turf-type tall fescue in the back yard every 3-4 days or it gets hairy. I mow the Bermuda lawn in the front with the reel mower about every 3 days at 1/2" since I leveled the lawn.
