Where is my engine stamp?

Hey boys

Where de heck is my engine stamp. I want to know if I'm truly numbers matching. Is there a stamp? I have the 1970 383 Auto. How can I tell if it's the HP version?? Ultimately i need to know whether it's the Holley or Carter carb.

Any advice will be truly appreciated.

There is a pad just above the oil pan on the drive side of the engine towards the back. It should have part of your car's VIN stamped on it. A Road Runner 383 should have the letter N for the HP 383. As far as if it is an HP or not, external sign would be the high performance exhaust manifolds. The head castings on a 383 2v in a Fury are the same as on a 440 six pack, so there is no difference there. The intake manifold is the same for any 383 4-bbl of that year for a Road Runner or a lo-po C-body. Casting number on the block, same thing. Somebody wiser might be able to tell you if the markings on the pad by the distributor can tell you if it is HP or not.

The pad below the distributor will say HP but may not be on the same line as the F383 stamp. I'm pretty sure the VIN stamp is on the pass side of the block but may be found elsewhere.

First you have to tell us what model your car is. The first 4 digits of the V.I.N.will tell that. the 5th digit will tell you what engine it came with from the factory.

The above post tells you where your partial V.I.N. is and it will begin with the model year digit as in 0 for 70. The next digit will be the assembly plant code for the plant that built it. The next 6 are the last six of your V.I.N.

The pad in front of the distributor will tell you the C.I.D., the model year for the engine as in "F" for 1970. If it is an HP engine it will be marked HP or HP2. The numbers on the bottom of this pad will be the assembly date of the engine. The casting date for the engine is on the side of the engine. There may be other marking on this pad but you will have to tell us what they are for us to decode.

Can you tell by my VIN whether or not I have the HP or the 330 horses?

While we're at it, anybody know what carb I'm supposed to have? The Holley or the Carter? What I've read says non HP and Auto, no A/C and no ECS equals the Carter 4736S. Does that sound right?

The N in the VIN only tells you it's a 383-4bbl. It does not tell you the horsepower rating. A 383-4 C body would have the N in the VIN also.

There are only two types of exhaust manifolds; 2bbl and 4bbl. There are no HP or LP manifolds. All 4bbls, HP or not, got the same exhaust manifold.

The head castings are the same but the rest of the valve train is different on an HP assembly.

No. As stated above, the N only tells you it came with a 383-4bbl.

As far as carb, the 70 model year gets real confusing. You have to take into account whether or not the car had A/C, the fresh air hood, and whether or not it came with ECS. Generally, 1970 engines are opposite of 68 and 69 in that the HP engines got a Holley instead of a Carter.

If you have the broacast sheet you can look on it and see what carb the car came with.

No A/C, no fresh air hood, and likely no ECS as this was a Canadian car.
So non-HP equals the Carter and HP means the Holley?

I have another post to this effect, but does orange engine mean HP and blue engine mean nonHP??
