I happened to meet the one of the pilots of that encounter
2 Raptors
Funny story
One of the Pilots was actually directly underneath the Adversarial Vehicle
With out going FOUO (For Official Use Only info) the REAL story is:
The encounter was in International waters, the 2 raptors flew right up to the Iranian F4 with out him knowing it.
One flew directly underneath the Iranian F4, checked out his "STORES" (Missiles) and then both "Popped up" and spooked the guy...
That air-vehicle was here at Edwards (2) for some time after the contract was awarded to the Lockheed-Martin/Boeing team
Boeing was the eventual (Loser/Winner) because the F-23 was a Northrup/McDonnell team.
The contract went to LM/Boeing BUT Boeing bought McDonnell right after that so, Boeing was a "winner" each way you look at it.
Many felt/said it was a better plane
Paul Metz & Jim Sandberg were the Northrop Test Pilots assigned to the ATF program.
-Metz was the first pilot to fly the F-23 ATF Northrup bird.
When they lost the contract, Metz "jumped ship" and became a Lockheed-Martin F-22 Test Pilot
Some remember him as a "Dick" to us, the Instro Team.
I really never had any issues with him other than his Typical GOD COMPLEX....
