Those early jet engines took forever to spool up, nearly 20 seconds from idle to full thrust. To keep them at power when landing and yet keep airspeeds down, this approach chute was used. A much larger chute was deployed when actually on the ground.

This is the last time a B-47 was in the air... on its way to Castle AFB museum in 1986.

I was stationed at Castle!
My "first" base
A gorgeous place at the time
WE had NUKES!

I live a few miles from the museum. Had a car show in the beginning of the summer but didn't take many photos.

Ah, Atwater CA
I long for the late 70s early 80s and my time spent there!
I was there when "WE" (Castle) received the Vulcan Bomber (1981ish?)

James Best otherwise known as Roscoe P. Coltrane from The Dukes of Hazzard was a B-17 Gunner.

I got the "pleasure” of polishing a B47 at Plattsburgh during USAF officer Field training in 1977, to work off demerits. I volunteered to do the topside of the wings and then promptly took a nap. ;-). I was a wise cracker then and i’ve never changed. Always looking for an angle to make life easier..
