Those early jet engines took forever to spool up, nearly 20 seconds from idle to full thrust. To keep them at power when landing and yet keep airspeeds down, this approach chute was used. A much larger chute was deployed when actually on the ground.

I live a few miles from the museum. Had a car show in the beginning of the summer but didn't take many photos.
