When I say not the best carrier aircraft, I'm referring the difficulty of the F4U in landing. The wing stall was uneven & visibility was impeded over the long nose.
The F6F Hellcat was a stout airplane & was tamer to land, though it may not have been quite the performer as the F4U. Kill ratio for the Corsair was 11 to 1. Kill ratio for the Hellcat was 19 to 1.
The British developed the long gentle left turn approach for the Corsair to achieve maximum visibility. They raised the seats also. They clipped the wings for more limited storage space, & in so doing realized that the increased sink rate greatly reduced the Bird's tendency to float before flaring, making it easier to get on the deck.
