Different types of American rockets over the years. The very far right is the heavy lift SLS (space launch system) which has been in talked about since 2011 and is in full development as of 2014. First launch is expected in two years, and it will have more thrust than the Saturn V which has boosted the Apollo missions. Once that lifts off we won't have to depend on the Russians to get US astronauts into space.

Hey super_bee-ski, was this the sort of Wright flyer that you had a ride in?
1909_Fort_Myer_gassing_up.jpg

This was the first military plane in US history, bought for $30,000 from the Wright Brothers. They had made many versions of the original "model A" that they first flew in 1903, this one had modifications and was called the Military Flyer. US Army requirements were a minimum 40 mph. flying speed and endurance of one hour. The brothers got a bonus because they went 42 mph. (with 32 hp. Wright designed engine) and stayed up for over 72 minutes. Wheels were installed in 1910, this plane was in service to train flyers until 1911 when it was donated to the Smithsonian. The wheels came off for the display so it looked more original.
