They're seaplanes. They can set down anywhere just about anywhere they're flying...and they don't have to do another circuit because they're about the only seaplane operators in the area.

Another WHAT IF story. The Republic XF-12 Rainbow was designed during WWII as a high speed reconnaissance aircraft. At the time, the ability to take pictures of what was happening in Japan was deemed important, and this was the result. Everything was streamlined and optimized for maximum speed, instead of other considerations such as bombing visibility or maneuverability. However, the war was over before production was able to start.

Of the two prototypes flown, they were the fastest four engined piston engine aircraft in the Air Force inventory, with a top speed of 470 mph. With the same engines, the B-29 was over 100 mph. slower. First flown half a year after the war ended in 1946, they showed great performance but by then jet power was coming and production never commenced.

If this was available three years earlier, it could have changed things both in military aircraft and civil aviation.

and if the Luftwaffe had better leadership, and they had gotten the bugs worked out, the world may be different today.

And if Germany had better leadership, they might not have started two wars. Might have used there brilliant minds in a different way. It's amazing what they developed.
