About the only jet airliner that Boeing designed that didn't end in a '7', the Boeing 720 was a shorter 707 derivative made for smaller runways, 154 were sold between 1958 and 1967 before they were overtaken by 727 and 737 models. They actually fit fewer passengers than today's stretched 737.

One specially fitted 'party bus' 720, leased to rock bands in the 1970s and known as The Starship, was a favorite of Led Zeppelin during their tours and is shown on their live Led Zeppelin DVD. Other famous users were Elton John, the Allman Brothers Band, Alice Cooper, Bob Dylan, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Sonny & Cher, and Olivia Newton-John. You can see how short the fuselage is in this view.

It made a great test bed for Pratt & Whitney Canada, seen here with different engines being flight tested.

The "xx7" designation goes all the way back to 1933 and the 247.
Or even the Model 7, a float bi-plane from the 1920s. But a lot of the prop jobs had other ending numbers, and all the jets both start and end with '7', except for the above 720. Except for 797, all the other numbers from 707 through 787 have been assigned so I wonder what number system will be used in the coming decades?

Had a few hours to kill while on a business trip not too long ago. If you are ever in the DFW area looking for something interesting to do .....
Recommended by a colleague, this was a pretty neat place. Similar to but different than the Smithsonian in DC and the Intrepid in NYC.
Lots of actual aircraft, scale models, engines, dioramas, etc. One location, by the large glass windows overlooking Dallas Love Field, they pipe in communications between the tower and approaching aircraft, good stuff!
Met with a few gentlemen veterans in their late eighties who were at work answering questions and disseminating all sorts of cool info/facts. It took the utterance of about three words of my introduction when one of them said "your from the Bronx aren't you"?! We had a good laugh, very nice men.
I took a bunch of pics if anyone is interested.

BTW ... for ground transportation the rental counter had this or a Prius.
It was a tough call, sorry back to the aircraft.
