The stubby looking 747SP (Special Performance) was a full 47 feet shorter than the original 747, created for customers who wanted the long range but didn't need the full size of the 747. Designed to compete with the smaller Lockheed L-1011 Tristar and the DC-10, it was produced from 1976-1983. With all the power and less weight, it had great climbing ability, short field performance and could travel at Mach .92 (622 mph.) Notice the larger rudder compared to the original birds; with a shorter fuselage they needed more rudder area to keep the same turning force.

It's still popular with some Middle East airlines.

In 1953, the RCAF became the world's first airforce to begin using jet powered transports. (As opposed to fighters or bombers).
