That thing has a motorjet, you can see the piston engine up front. It wasn't very fast.

i have a book on the development of the XB-70, and have seen at the AF Museum. I wonder if the exhaust smoke was more visible due to a camera filter. The jet did not smoke that much. Also, in afterburner, there is almost no smoke visible. I once was at an airshow in Poltava UK and they flew their current, seing- wing bomber. I can't remember the name. Smoke was almost yellow, which i assume was due to the fuel composition.
