That photo really shows how narrow the fuselage was on that B-17. Only about seven feet at the widest...about half a foot wider than a DC-3.

That's a scary incident. I think it happened at Reno. He had engine trouble, opened the canopy and signaled the problem. The other airplanes didn't see the red flag. Here's a larger version:
